New BOC Governor

The Toronto Star reports that Mark Carney will be the new BoC Governor.  That means exciting times ahead for collectors!  Signature changes and printing date variations are bound to keep us occupied for awhile!

Mr. Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada, effective 1 February 2008, for a term of seven years. As Governor, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank.

Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Mr. Carney received a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988. He received a master's degree in economics in 1993, and a doctorate in economics in 1995, both from Oxford University.

Prior to joining the public service, Mr. Carney had a thirteen-year career with Goldman Sachs in its London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto offices. His progressively senior positions included Co-Head of Sovereign Risk; Executive Director, Emerging Debt Capital Markets; and Managing Director, Investment Banking.

Mr. Carney was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada from August 2003 until his appointment as Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance in November 2004. In addition to his domestic responsibilities in the Department of Finance, he also served as Canada's Finance Deputy at the G-7, the G-20, and the Financial Stability Forum.

I can see why there were no $5s printed in 2007 as yet.  Same theory as to why we haven't been seeing any $10s printed in 2007 beyond BTK (although we may see BTL possibly by the spring).  The BoC may have realized that David Dodge's tenure as Governor was nearing the end.

Expect the first denomination with the new signature sometime during the summer.  We will probably be seeing the $5 prefixes between APF and APK over the coming months, and during this time don't expect to see any $5s printed in 2007.  We may see the print year changeover of $5s from 2006 to 2008, if anything at all, and the first full-run prefix being APL.

As for the $10s with the new signature, we may see the next print year (2008) by July or August.  After all, the 2001 print year lasted less than a year in circulation and released 4 full-run prefixes (FEA-FED), resulting in the 2002 print year being launched in Canada by June or July of 2002.
