What is polymer?

Could anybody on the board explain to me what polymer is?  What advantages and disadvantages it may have if it were on Canadian banknotes?  And how long polymer banknotes would last?

Also, would it cost more money to print a future Canadian banknote on polymer than on the same paper as the Journey series notes and beforehand?

Look it up on Google.  There are lots of other posts regarding polymer and I believe there is also a complete site dedicated to world polymer notes.  All this information is available if you search for it.

The advantages are overwhelming.
Some lists are available from the Australian National Bank, statistiks from the New Zealand, reasons for decisions from the Mexican etc.

I have informations saying that Canada is proofing (as the US).
