On a recent trip to the States I noticed a sheet of twelve American $2 star notes, framed, hanging on a wall.  At least I think they were star notes...I've never seen any before, but these had a little star affter the serial number.
The letter preceeding the serial number was L.
The first two digits of the serial number were zeroes.
As a member of this forum I no better than to create a post with little information to go on but thought i would ask anyways.  What could these notes be worth.
Unfortunately I didn't note the year or signatures.  :-[
Condition was as expected for uncut framed notes.
Thanks,
Craig

I'm not sure, but if memory serves, these sheets are available from the official Bureau of Engraving and Printing website for about $200.

Back with new packaging, same great wiki editor!

I believe these were issued in 2003. This was the final printing of the US $2. They were all issued in low quantities except the 2003A Series (which was issued for circulation)
I don't think the US plans on issuing anymore $2 Bills... Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks

The official records released by the BEP indicate that there were some Series 2003A $2 notes issued to the San Francisco FRB after being printed in Sept 2006. The serial numbers range from L 000 00001 A through L 640 00000 A (64,000,000 notes).

The only other $2 notes issued to the San Francisco FRB were dated Series 1976.

Official released records do not include any L-* notes for Series 1995, 2003 or 2003A.

That said, there is a footnote that says additional star notes and uncut sheets numbered above 960 00000 were printed for premium sets and collector sales. In the Series 1995, some uncut sheets of star notes from the regular printings were released as well.

Coincidentally, a friend of mine just got back from California and thinking he had something great for me, he brought home with him a $2 note that he got back in change or something like that. Too bad it was circulated and only a regular-issue L-A 2003A note.

To All:

I hope this will answer a lot of questions.  Please see this site for the number of $2 notes produced.  Other denominations and years are shown in this site as well.  $2 notes are pretty rare in the U.S., very similar to Canada.  I,too wonder if the $2 notes ever gone to OBSOLETE and replaced with coins.  Very limited $2 notes are produced each year.  The design has not changed since 1976.  More information about U.S. $2 can be found in the wikipedia website.

According to my 2008 Red Book, the star (replacement) notes for the 2003 series worth $95 each UNC-63 with Marin/Snow signatures.  The 2003-A series is the latest of today and I believe it started printing since 2006.  Just last month of November 2008, no $2 bills produced.

There are a total of 12 districts printed in U.S currencies, from A to L

A=Boston
B=New York
C=Philadelphia
D= Cleveland
E=Richmond
F=Atlanta
G=Chicago
H=St. Louis
I=Minneapolis
J=Kansas City
K=Dallas
L=San Francisco

Thanks for the info., it really help me to study the US$ notes.
Although I don't have the star $2 notes, I do have 20 notes 2003 series IA in sequence (c unc condition) which I exchange with my co-worker @ Kent, WA during 2006 at face value plus a dinner.

Thanks All,

I do know that the notes I saw had a serial number starting with L 00, so they aren't notes printed as per Brent's footnote commnet.
I guess I'll call the little truckstop and see if someone will walk over to the wall and give me some more info from the sheet.

Thanks
Craig
