Various 1937 - 1991 'Specimen' Bills - need help on value

Hello everyone, first off i'd just like to compliment this forum, i've been silently lurking for a couple days looking around and reading some interesting threads. This looks to be a very knowledgeable place, and a very long story short - i am looking for knowledge. i have a book on order currently that should help me out, but currently i'm trying to catalog a bunch of stuff i've recently inherited.

i definitely want to try and put values, or atleast a ballpark value on everything i have so i can get a sense of what i'm dealing with. i was sorting through some stuff today and i came across 25 various 'Specimen' bills, different denominations, from 1937 - 1991. all look to be in excellent condition, and some look to have been graded (sticker with year/details/UNC) already. i know my grandpa as well, and with each bill in their sleeve, they wouldn't have been touched or fondled by him.

These are valued at $1,300 per set but I think these sell for less.

This set is valued at $850.

I think the 1937 $1000 would be worth more than $4,400

actually i wanted to ask, in terms of those 1937 bills, obviously a set with each denomination there, but in terms of selling currency, where would someone get the higher value... selling individually to the 'right' buyer, or selling the set to the 'right' buyer?

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I personally think that it is best to keep the set together and sell as a set. This will save you time, money and aggravation in the end.

The 1937 may be considered by some as a specialized item, and may take a little time to sell, as this is a high dollar item with a narrower customer base. Other factors may be a slower selling/buying market at the present time.

There are a few things to consider with these notes, as if they are impaired by staining or thinning, or have glue residue on the back, this may reduce the selling price slightly. But yes this is still a tough set to obtain.

The last set to go through auction sold in June 2009 for $12,750 + (buyers’ premium of 15%) + taxes (if applicable).
