Do you think I should send these notes away to get professionally graded? Are they worth the expense to do so? I'm just getting started collecting as I have always some what collected (placing certain bills away) but I really don't have a great experience in grading my notes. would having them graded be a good exercise to help develop my own grading ability?
Grading is something that some people like and others don't... If you plan to keep the notes in your own personal collection I would likely not get them graded at this time.
Take the time to learn how to grade and ask others perhaps at shows or even some dealers what they believe them to be and their reasons for their opinions. There is plenty of free advice out there and grading is always subjective.
If you decide to sell down the road, some collectors will want to see the raw note, not a slabbed note.
On the other hand I know BCS is a Kitchener based TPG service that is having a summer special on graded notes (I believe a certain qty may be required), but single notes can be graded at a nominal free. They provide a quick turn around and Steve Bell is very knowledgeable and very willing to answer most questions you may have...
You can check out their website...just google Banknote Certification Service.
Hope that helps
