Hello,

I have a collection of coins and banknotes and I think selling some of them for a while. I live near Quebec City, but I go to Toronto 2-3 times a year and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a place where I could sell my banknotes. I am not a great connoisseur, several banknotes come from my family, and I would like to have a fair offer.

If you have any suggestion, I will appreciate to receive it. I took pictures of some banknotes and you can have a look via the links below. I have more to sell but, for now I'm looking to sell those one.

I have looked over the notes you've scanned & I can honestly say that only 3 catch my eye (mind you- I don't collect Chartered bank notes nor Dominion "Shinplasters" the first few notes).

Scan #7 is of a 1937 Coyne/Towers $1 in AU - UNC, scan #17 is a 1954 modified $50 (EF-AU) & #13 shows a large seal 1935 $20 (VG-F) condition I believe (just a quick survey from the images).  In order to properly grade the note, I'd have to inspect them: but the bottom line is these are the 3 most significant notes most collectors would seek simply b/c the other BOC notes are in G-VG condition & are fairly common I believe.  I cannot comment on the Chartered bank notes but all of them look well circulated to me.  Like any memorabilia, coin/collectible: an item is only sought after if its in high grade or decent condition.

What to do with them/how to dispose of them?
A) You can approach a dealer in any city of Canada (& if I were you- why not go to a dealer in QC?) and get the same reply: some they'll take (like the 3 I mentioned) and give you bottom dollar (well-below book) value for them b/c they have a mortar & brick shop to maintain & must make a profit in order for it to be worth their time.  This is the least time consuming of the 3 options but will yield you the least profit.
-If you are bent on selling them to a Toronto dealer than you should just use the Internet to source one near the hotel or place you stay.

B) You can open an eBay account & sell them online via eBay.  They'll take a cut but the notes will probably reach a higher value than what a dealer will give you. There are other online auction sites you also may wish to check out (ebid, kijiji, craigslist, amazon perhaps?)  Someone from the forum can comment on this if they have more info. This is the most time consuming of the 3 options but will yield you the best return.

C) list the notes at an auction (this is time consuming but could yield decent returns) This would be a better option if you were to list all (or most) of the notes/coins you mentioned & once again why not go online to see what shows/auction houses you could use.

In the mean time, you could educate yourself about the notes in you have by buying (or borrowing) a Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money. "Canadian Banknotes" will give you more info on the Chartered banknotes you have.

Hope this helps.
