A large hoard of 34 Narrow Panel Gordon-Towers notes showed up at the Jeffrey Hoare Auction No. 57 in Toronto in October 1997. Of these 34 notes only 3 were J/A's while the other 31 were H/A's. Amongst the 31 H/A's there were no fewer than 26 pieces in About Unc condition in two consecutive runs, i.e.,
H/A 4249161-4249170 (excluding 4249165 --- see Note below **)
H/A 4250802-4240818
The above AU notes were offered individually and sold for about $500 (plus 10% commission) each although a few pieces didn't sell. I attended the auction in person but I didn't have the foresight to buy any! However, $500 was a lot to pay at the time --- especially when so many of the same note were on offer.
( ** Note: H/A 4249165 sold for $875 in the earlier Jeffrey Hoare Auction No. 55 in February 1997 ).
The J/A notes were as follows:
J/A 1004174 (About Unc) -- $1,000
J/A 1004175 (About Unc) -- see Note below ***
J/A 1004176 (About Unc) -- $1,050
J/A 1004177 (About Unc) -- $1,200
( *** Note: J/A 1004175 sold for $1,100 in the earlier Jeffrey Hoare Auction No. 55 in February 1997).
Thus, a total of 35 H/A's and 4 J/A's showed up at Toronto auctions in 1997. Whether or not the J/A Prefix is actually 10 times scarcer than the H/A Prefix remains to be seen though ......
Toronto in 1997 !! --- Those were the days !!!!
