Charlton Catalogue question

Hi dear friends,

Question for the Pro here, what is the difference between these two book by Charlton Press, there is the Canadian Government Paper money one, that I bought for 20-30$ and there is also the Canadian Bank Note one, at about 100$. what is the difference, I'm a beginner in collecting paper money, is this usefull for the newbie that I am... Worth the price?

Now for a more serious response to the question...

The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Bank Notes, currently in its 5th edition, covers all known chartered bank notes. It does NOT cover Bank of Canada, Dominion of Canada, Province of Canada, etc.

The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money, currently in its 19th edition, covers -- as the title says -- all government-issued paper money, including known municipal issues, depression scrip, etc.

If you collect chartered notes, get the Canadian Bank Notes book. If you collect anything else, get the Canadian Government Paper Money book.

So if you want to cover ALL Canadian banknotes, you need them both.

However, if you're just starting out, (have a few Canadian bank notes) the Charlton Government Paper Money is all you really need at this point in time.  

It gives you an outline (and book value) of all recent notes going back to the 1700's.  The big book covers Chartered banks, and this an area that can be overwhelming in terms of the number of banks, and kind of notes to collect.  Even BOC notes are extensive enough to keep a collector busy for years.

Typically collectors start out with the cheaper book and then work their way up to the more expensive and specailized collecting of Chartered notes.  It's definitely worth the $20 investment.
