How do I reduce the size to 80KB without loosing to much resolution?

With regards to posting photos, has anybody thought about using Google's free software
http://picasa.google.com/ Picasa 2? It gives you a free web album with 250MB of storage, and you can direct-link to the file. It could come in useful for posting higher quality scans and images, as I have easily posted 2MB+ photos on thier service. Very intuitive and easy to use.

It certainly provides an alternative to posting smaller files directly on the CPMF forum...

Louis, you can increase the compression level of the JPG file without reducing the resolution. Given the grey background, it should compress nicely. I don't know what program you're using, but most allow you to set the compression level as part of the "save" process. Normally you'll see a number (1-12) or words (small size, high quality). Try a mid-range setting, you should be able to get at least 500 pixels across.

I've experienced the same problem.  I wanted to post a 17K cropped close-up jpeg and got a message that there was only 18 K memory left, and the image couldn't be posted.  So I gave up.

Paul my picture is 74 kb and the system is telling me it is 232 kb to big???

This problem has been resolved. I've cleaned up the attachments folder yet again.

Advice and Info:

• Old attachments are deleted from the server from time to time. Only in rare circumstances will attachments less than 90 days old be removed.
• The size limit for attachments is 80 KB. Image sizes can be reduced using graphics programs such as Photoshop, and file formats such as GIF and JPG with high compression ratios or low colours.
  
• Alternate hosting for images exists: imageshack.us is one, and it also provides a handy clickable thumbnail with copy-and-paste code for forum use.
• If you have your own hosting, you control how long the image remains online.
• When directly linking to off-site images, please keep in mind that some users of this site are on slow dialup connections, and large images take a great deal of time to load. Keep directly-linked file sizes at a reasonable level (100kb max please).
• At any time, if I notice an image that could be made more efficient in terms of dimensions or file size, I may, at my discretion, step in and alter the image. (This is purely a benevolent gesture, but I am not obligating myself to do so, nor is it a "policing" act).

You can also use the YaBB "Insert Image" tag. And just write the URL of the image between the two tags. No one seems to be doing this, although it saves readers some trouble since the image is inserted directly into the page.
