Is there a shortage of $100 bills?

A very strange thing happened today when I went to the bank to pickup a $10,000 order of cash. To my surprise, each $100 bill I recieved in the bundle was Bird $100s. What's even stranger is this was from BMO, a bank that supposedly returned all of the 1988 $100s.

Is there a shortage of $100 bills, causing the older Bird notes to be reissued? I haven't seen a Bird $100 in a long time, and suddenly I get $10000 of them. What's even worse is that many of these notes are in very bad condition, with 6 or 7 missing pieces, with one missing a whole corner.  

I dont know if theres shortage but when I went to take out $500 in 100s about 2 weeks ago at a TD bank. I got all $100 birds. Theres still a lot out there, but I dont think they would reissue them.

IMO:  I think its just random (luck of the draw) but I could be wrong.  I've still gotten all Bird $20  from a TD IBM recently.

And I don't know if I was being paranoid.. but after a several large withdrawals of $10 (during the original Journey issue) it seemed as if the bank reserved the rattiest torn up notes for me.  I was sure there were a few tellers who didn't like what I was doing and tried to discourage me by setting aside the worse bundles they could find.... as I said.. maybe this is just paranoia... maybe its entirely my imagination.. but it sure seemed like it was occurring on an increasing frequency until I requested new notes, and then they started to make it even more inconvenient (a biger hassle), and I stopped altogether.

This is actually normal practice for a bank when they want to get you to stop. They make it a bigger hassle and give you all kinds of excuses. Then finally they take all the notes they would send for destruction and give them to you. I had this many times when a branch hated me bringing cash. So I quit ordering cash and just brought them more of it. 2 can play at that game!  

Banks HATE Currency Collectors with a passion. It takes a lot of patience and perseverance to find the "Right" people who understand what you are doing and why. These are the people you make good friends with and they will bend over backwards for you.

I can't say I have seen a shortage of $100 Notes. They must have sent them all west.  

I do see the odd Bird $100's from all Banks.   but 90% of them at Journey. I got almost $10000 in $100's not too long ago and I only had about 4 Birds.   I had 2 notes that were 1 note from 2-Digit Radars but were all ratty. As a note there was not a single Insert...  

I don't think this branch would do such a thing by giving me the crap they've got, I've got a good relationship with them, and have been able to get lots of UNC $5, $10, $20 radars (and the occasional $50s and $100s) from the tellers. Maybe in their cash orders they just got all Bird $100s. It was just strange to me, because I honestly haven't seen a Bird $100 after pawing through more than 500 or so $100 bills in the last year, I had thought Journey $100s have basically replaced all the $100s, especially since they put out a few new prefixes recently too. Guess I was wrong.  

Here is what probably happened.  Seeing as how this is high flying time (vacations  ), there are alot of corresponding withdrawals.  The bank could have hadthem culled aside to be shipped, but then ran out of enough by the time you got there.  They use them when only they have to, in this kind of situation.  Same goes for other bird notes.  They are slowly culled aside, but if they need to slam 100 in the machine and there was nothing coming in, in go the bird notes.

Just went to a branch in orangeville and asked if she had any $100 birds in the till. She said no, but the teller beside her said she has two. Both AU if not unc. Grabbed both of them.

Casinos give out new and old $100 at random.

I have a shortage of $100 notes right now. Maybe I can find some with a bit of effort.
