I drove my daughter to a camp in Orillia this morning and planned to visit some coin stores on the route back.
I stopped at a store in Barrie.  I walked into the stop and the proprietor was sorting through some stamps. There was a small collection of notes - about 12 Canadian and about 20 foreign, and I asked to look at them. Once I finished I asked if he had any more notes.  He said he had a large selection and then said "I'm not prepared to allow you to look through them - what are you looking for?"  I said "I'm looking for  changeover prefixes".  He had a blank look on his face and I then explained what changeover prefixes were.  He repeated that he was not prepared to allow me to look through his inventory.  I was somewhat stunned and I left the store.  I immediately became pissed at the way I had been treated and I walked back into the store, offered my numismatic business card and told this "gentleman" that he should treat experienced collectors better.  He refused to take my card and said he doesn't care about my business.  I am totally appalled that this person would call himself a professional dealer.

A couple of years ago I complained about the poor service I received when I went to a well known dealer in Winnipeg.  At least that fellow was willing to show me some stock..albeit one note at a time as all of his stock was kept in a high security lock-up.   Nevertheless I was treated with respect there, while today I was treated like trash.

If anyone is interested in the name of this store and the proprietor, I'd be happy to share it by private message.

I would love to know where not to go. Please PM, as I do try (really hard) to get into a store whenever possible. No much in the way of even coin shops in rugged Northern Ontario (different rant, sorry). As I'm in Barrie often enough, does anyone have any suggestions.

I wonder if the owner worked out that you know more than he did, and was simply afraid of "being taken" by someone who knew more than he did. This is not to suggest that our original poster (eyevet)  wanted to try (too hard, hey a deal is a deal tough). In the end the owner didn't handle it right.

This is a tough hobby to track, I've given up on working out SRS inserts.

:)
