1912 Canadian Bank of Commerce $100

Talk about a nice note

This one was recently founds it's way on a very popular auction site. Only lasted several hours before someone snaged it. Though I would post some scans for anyone interested in verifying it in the register.

For those of you wondering, no I was not the one who purchased it but if you have one for sale I would be happy to hear from you.

Cat Value is $1200 in VG and $2000 in Fine. These being the only 2 grades priced. In my opinion this note looks slighly better than VG but this may just be the image!

It was listed on June 18 at 14:34 PDT and it sold on the same day at 18:06 PDT. The buyer paid somewhere between two and three times the current catalogue value for it. He made a bold decision to snap it up and will probably never regret it.

I too recall dealing with him. This was in the early 1980's when he lived in Montreal, shortly before he moved to Florida. I recall selling him a superb Traders Bank of Canada $5 1910 in original VF or better, of which very few examples are known. I always regretted selling that note! This gentleman had a great eye for rarity and he possessed tremendous market foresight.

The $100 1912 Commerce note illustrated above previously appeared at a Jeffrey Hoare Sale held in October 1997 (Lot 1604). It was estimated at $1,500.00 but did not find a buyer. Quite amazingly, there were two other Commerce $100 1912 notes and a $50 1912 Commerce note in the same auction! One of the other $100 notes was in Good (estimated at $750 but did not sell), the other $100 was in VG (estimated at $750, sold for $440), and the $50 was in Good (estimated at $800, sold for $520). Those were the days!!
