I found a $50 serial number AHM9986874 with a dark smudge on the 4 on the right side, but not on the left. It looks like the ink bled. Is this a common error?

I would need to see a picture of the smudge to determine if the note would be minor or major. It is very hard to determine an error without a picture. What I can suggest, I have seen and even received notes with a minor smudge usually the last digit of one of the serial numbers. I have only kept maybe a half dozen, and I would net expect any great return on the notes as I would consider them to be very minor.

Made a mistake, the smudge is on the left side, not the right.
It does seem very minor, I'll try to borrow someone's scanner and post a pic tonight  :)

If this note was in au/unc condition then I would keep it. The heavily inked 4 in my option is a very minor thing. I had a similar $5 yesterday, which I spent due to its poor condition.

What I did notice (if the scan/picture is straight on) is the note appears to be slightly off cut, and you can see this on the bottom border in the picture.

If you don’t need the $50, then why not keep it, I would, but if I really needed the $50, I think I would spend it.

Cheers
