Hello all. I have five 1954, $5.00 banknotes, Be-Ras, in Gem Unc. in sequential order. I recently purchased these bank notes from a person that put them away in 1958. This is the first time in 51 years that they have been taken out of the original Mylar sleeve.
My question is, each note on the reverse side, near the bottom, has evidence of scurf marks or ink smears about 3/4 " wide on each bank note that seems to have been made by the printing press. The smear is not solid but it is a well defined smear.
Question is, what does that do to the value?
Any help is appreciated.   TOMMTBOY

If it's the same colour as the rest of the note, it sounds like offset ink, which is common on 1954 notes. I don't mind it on any note, even nice clean, white ones, and wouldn't change the value to me. Some people don't like it. If it's real heavy, it could be classed as a error and could make the notes a bit more valuable.

Does the fact it has smears increase that value in Gem Unc? TOMMYBOY

It depends on how major the ink is.
