I see bills listed as; BC-46aA, BC-46bA etc.  What exactly does this mean?

A change in the signatures

BC-46aA = Lawson/Bouey
BC-46bA = Crow/Bouey

Those are Charlton catalogue numbers for identifying notes.  You need a catalogue to understand them.
