I appreciate the tellers at my local banks that let me go through their mutilated pile. Some of my best finds have been from there.

In my searches, I see so many brand new Journey series banknotes, especially $50s and $100s in the mutilated piles.

There are many people who deal exclusively in cash and since the $1000 note is no longer available, they use $50s and $100s to hoard wealth.


Usually, I leave journey notes behind but I will take them if I know someone who wants them.

Often, I only have a couple of minutes to look through the notes so I can't check serial numbers for insert notes.

Understandable, you can only do so much. Personally I never find enough at once that it is a bother for me to just take everything they've got. If I change my mind later and don't want to keep it I can always just spend it. It sounds like you go through much more than me though, haha.

I once worked with an older lady who knew of my hobby. When her elderly mother passed, they went through mom's house and found massive amounts of cash hoarding. This lady and her brother split the hoard, and she invited me over to her place to look through it all and trade out anything I wanted before she brought it to the bank. Aside from being very grateful, as a younger collector (I was born in the mid 90s) it was fantastic to be able to comb through massive quantities of 50s and 100s from before I was born. I added a lot to my collection that day, including a few EHX in decent shape.

That's a great story!

I got some consecutive EHX replacement $50s at face value from a bank a few years ago.  They would have been Uncirculated but the person who deposited them crunched them up! 

I kept them anyway, because they are still replacements but now, they are VF at best.

Aug 3rd finds:

I searched through some coin rolls that I bought last Saturday.

There was no silver, but I did find a 1947 maple leaf nickel, a 1941, a 1955, and some nickels from the 60s. There was a fair number of US coins, including more than one full roll of US dimes.
The most interesting coin was a 10c piece from the British Caribbean Territories-Eastern Group, dated 1955.

August 4th finds:

Yesterday, I stopped by a bank and I picked up some coins since there were no bills available.

I was surprised when I got a variety of foreign coins; a 10 sen piece from Malaysia, a 5 pence coin from the UK, a coin from Kuwait, and a fair number of US coins.

The cherry on top is of course not one, but two chrome plated Canadian nickels dated 1953 and 1954!

Unfortunately, the 1953 and 1954 nickels are the common variety and also rusty.

August 6th finds:

Today, I hunted some coins that I brought home yesterday.  There were some interesting foreign finds in the rolls such as a coin from Ukraine and a nice 2000 commemorative quarter and a 1983 nickel.  (Should I be saving 1983 dated coins?  Please comment…)  But the highlight as to be two British Indian 1 Anna coins from 1939 and 1945!

It’s amazing what people stuff into these rolls…

On a less exciting note, the teller also offered me 40 rolls of pennies.  Of course, I had to take them!

August 8th finds:

On Saturday, I went to my local“dump bank” to drop off my searched rolls.  As I was doing my transaction, I noticed a bunch of clear rolls that another customer had dropped off. 
Since I was there, I asked the teller if I could buy them and he gave them to me.

I then headed to my regular local bank to pick up more coins.  I got a mix of quarters, nickels and dimes, as usual.

When I got home, I was blown away by what I found from both pickups…

From my regular pickup bank, I managed to get a couple of 12 sided nickels, including one from 1949 and better yet, I got a silver dime from 1960!

I then searched the clear rolls from my “dump” bank.  The quarter rolls contained not one, but TWO silvers, dated 1961 and 1965!

Of course, there was the usual handful of US coins and older nickel bullion coins in the rolls.

It has been a long time since I have found a silver quarter. I was just about to stop hunting quarters and then I find silver. 

It goes to show that rolled coins can conceal real treasures and you might be missing out if you don’t take a chance.

I’m now convinced that I need to buy coin rolls from my “dump” bank; I guess I’ll have to start marking my rolls with a sharpie again…

August 10th finds:

The silver streak continues!

Yesterday, I went to my local bank.  They had only a handful of customer wrapped coin rolls so I bought them all.

To my surprise, there was a silver dime from 1965 in one of the rolls made from repurposed white paper.

August 12th finds:

I finally got some paper money from one of my banks!  Even if they are not in good condition, it’s still good to see birds series notes in the mutilated piles!  (There was a birds series $1000 note, but I did not take it because it was in very bad condition).

Along with the bills, I got some coins.  The only noteworthy finds out of all of those coins was a nice 1970 nickel and a really nice 1966 nickel that looks like it was broken out of an uncirculated set.

August 13th finds:

Today, I went to some banks in an area of town that I haven’t visited in awhile.  One bank had nothing in terms of notes, so I bought ten rolls of dimes. 

The second bank had some paper notes, so I bought them all.  i mentioned to the teller that I would also take pennies if they had them and she said “We have 32 rolls of pennies”.
So naturally, I bought them all.

The third bank had no notes or pennies, but they did have a lot of customer wrapped coins, so I bought as much as I could carry, including ten rolls of 2026 quarters…The first 2026 dated coins I have seen, other than the commemorative loonies and toonies…

August 13th coin hunting results:
Foreign coins, nickel bullion and silver!

The coin rolls I brought home today sure paid out!

The nickels contained an unusually large number of pre-1982 nickel bullion coins…over $6 worth!  Highlights include a couple of 12-sided nickels, a 2000p nickel and strangely, a 20c coin from New Zealand and a 20 cent coin from Hong Kong with the Queen on the obverse!

Another cool thing was that there was a 1970 nickel—the second 1970 in as many days! 

Adding to the excitement, the collection dump of nickels yielded a bunch of nice shiny coins from the 1970s and 1980s, especially 1985.

The $150 in dimes contained surprisingly few US coins but there was a nice silver dime from 1960!
