Can someone explain to me again why the new Charlton GPM catalogue needs to be in colour?  I'm looking at the cover price that has gone up 50% and I'm thinking B&W was just fine.

And is it still printed in Canada?

I understand that there was an abundance of colored ink cartridges that were about to hit their expiry date so if they were not used up, they would have been thrown out.   What better way to recoup some cash for some new ones :D

Personally I think color pics are a great idea. I don't mind spending the few extra bucks. Maybe the catalogue might even be more appealing to new collectors and give the hobby a bit of a kick start in these slack times.

Needs? No, I don't think it needs to be in colour, but I still think it's a great idea. From the sample pages posted on Charlton's website and my own imagination for the rest, I think it looks fantastic. Yes, the cost has gone up, but I completely understand why and I don't disagree with it. As you can see from my other post, I am still buying one this year, and so are others. Reservations were quickly snapped up at the coin club last night.

It's very useful to have the notes illustrated in colour as long as the colours printed in the catalogue are true and accurate. It's then much easier to see if a particular note in one's collection has faded or has been chemically altered, etc. This is not such a problem for experienced collectors such as members of this Forum but it could be a problem for neophyte collectors who have never seen, for example, a Bank of Canada $2 1935 note before. Hopefully, in future editions, some coverage will be given to the variations in ink colour for certain notes that were printed over long periods of time.

I think its great that it will be in color. For the price $29.95 yes its higher in price but then again hasn't everything else gone up in price?

I think he was questioning the Price of $29.95.

$29.95 is the Cover price.

Chapters Does in fact list it for 34% off with a price of $19.76 for Non Members.  If you are a chapters member it is $18.77.

And yes this is the for the new 24th Edition.  They even list the release date of July 15th 2011.

I priced it out on checkout.  Price includes shipping in Ontario.   But if you order another book or two you could get free shipping I guess.

Items$29.95
You Save $10.19
Shipping $7.48
HST $1.36
Total CAD $28.60

I don't really care because I already ordered mine from the group order.  I think the book is still worth it at $29.95.

I have often ordered mine through chapters online, they are very fast. Last year i pre-ordered it and it arrived the day after the release date and if your living in the montreal region you know there aren't many places that carry this book.

I ordered mine early and it shipped yesterday... I guess they don't have enough on hand to satisfy demand.

Looks like a few of their retail stores have started receiving stock. I ordered mine July 17th and it is still awaiting shipment. It says it will be delivered by Aug 12th 2011.

*edit : Just received shipping confirmation today (July 23rd, at 1am)

This may not be obvious to all, so I will post it here.

Chapters stores are carrying the new catalogue and placing them on the shelf.  However, don't expect to be able to pay the website price of under $20 when you buy a copy at the store.  The website and stores are separate entities.  They say shelf space is at a premium, hence the higher cost.

HOWEVER, you can still get a 20% discount off the cover price on store purchases.  This sale lasts until October 23rd.  So that's $23.99 plus GST.  No shipping means it could be cheaper than ordering from the website, and of course, no waiting.  You might want to check the website to see if any Chapters or Coles stores have copies in stock near you.

Thanks to the colour printing and expanded format, the new catalogue weighs about twice as much as the old B&W version.  In fact, the weight is comparable to the Bank Notes catalogue.  That should make you bourse floor walkers hoping to get into better shape very happy  ;D
