Romania will be devaluing their currency and replacing all of their currently circulating polymer notes with new polymer this summer, starting on July 1st.

No sneak peeks of the new notes yet, but we can see the denominations and dimensions in this document released by Romania's central bank.

http://www.bnro.ro/Ro/Prez/R20041117guv.pdf

This document is in Romanian, but if you can read French, Italian, or especially Latin, it's more or less comprehensible.

I will actually be in Romania this July, would anybody like me to pick up some of the new (or old?) polymer notes for them?  Send me a PM if so.

Looks like their new currency will be short lived; Romaina is scheduled to join the EU in 2009.

There is a thin line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'.

We'll see.  Entry into the EU does not guarantee replacement of the former national currency with the euro.  Hungary, for example, has been an EU member for nearly a year and it will be at least another year before the euro is introduced, provided that Hungary keeps abreast of the economic conditions required (google "Maastricht criteria" for more info.)

the Romanian economy is growing but is still light years behind Hungary's, and I doubt we'll be seeing the euro introduced there anytime soon.

Images of the new notes and coins have now been released.  The size and dimensions of them correspond exactly to that of euro currency.

Nice looking notes!

The doc is in Romanian only.

Redenomination of domestic currency

• As of 1 July 2005, the leu (ROL), Romania's legal tender, will be subject to redenomination so that 10,000 old lei, in circulation on that date, shall be exchanged for 1 new leu (RON).
• The existing banknotes and coins, i.e. the old lei, shall be legal tender until end-December 2006.
• By 31 December 2006, the existing banknotes and coins, i.e. the old lei, are to be replaced gradually by the new banknotes and coins.
• Starting 1 January 2007, the exchange shall be made only at the NBR branches carrying out payments and at the offices of the credit institutions authorised by the NBR Governor's order to perform the exchange.
• The exchange shall be made during a three-year period, at most, until 31 December 2009*.

*) NBR drafted a proposal to the Parliament to abilitate the bank to exchange the old leu for unlimited period.

Great links to these high-res images!  Thanks!

Can anyone find any repeating pattern in the "eurion constellations"?  There certainly isn't anything that looks like what we have on our notes.  I can't make out any patterns at all.

This is reminiscent of the new Mexican note.  It doesn't seem to have any regular patterns, but perhaps it is dealing with the less- (but becoming more-) common technique of altering the rotation of the 4 outer circles about the inner, but keeping the ratio of distances constant in a root(2), root(3), root(4), root(5) pattern.  Seems plausible, but I would have to do some precise measurements to convince myself of such a theory, and at present, I have no such convenient means at my disposal.
