I decided to start this thread to accommodate the casual coin collector.  Most of us started collecting coins by picking a few from the bank or from pocket change.  Since the discussion doesn't have to be limited to RARE coins, feel free to share your "picks".

I still think this is the most fun way to engage new collectors in the hobby, whether it be coins or paper money.

I've recently started roll searching pennies from my local bank.  I've searched through $50 worth of cents so far and have found many older coins, some in surprisong condition.

Some highlights from this lot:

a nice 1952 R/B
several red cents from 1968-78
15 USA Wheat pennies, the oldest of which is 1921
a 2 Euro cent piece
a British 1 penny piece
a 1939...heavily circulated, but still a keeper
a 1931 in VG-F
a 1932 in VG/F
An entire roll of UNC 1967 pennies
several from he dates 1961-1966 with some original lustre

What I will miss the most when the penny is withdrawn is the chance to search for old coins in change.  The other denominations have for the most part been culled of older dates. (When was the last time you got a nickel with edges or even a coin dated before 1980?)

Oh well, I guess time marches on...
What have you found?

Good thread.

Forget about pre 1980 coins. I have no luck finding the 2012 pre-security toonie and loonie.

I do find 1966-1970 quarters but have difficult time finding 1992 quarters.

C'est la vie

I'm in the same boat, can't find the $2 Coin... this is a scarce one.

It is selling on e-bay at 3 to 4 times its face value. That's the best I have found. Same with the loonie.

When I was at the bank last week I just so happened to decided to search some rolls for fun.
10 rolls of cents, a few young queens, 53 the youngest and a 2euro cent from Italy.
10 rolls of nickels, two young queens and a 47.
10 rolls of dimes, 8 rolls were new, nothing of note.
10 rolls of quarters, all reclamation, didnt have the colour mens hockey i'm missing.
1 roll of Dollars, grey cup, didnt have that one.
1 roll of Toonies, a 400th Quebec I was surprised to since I believe they were only released around Quebec.

I collect banknotes depicting Tallships. And to a lesser degree, all watercrafts.

Back in 1993 to 1995, I used to go to the local bank branches (TD and RBC) all the time asking for boxes of pennies, sometimes $25 x 2 boxes worth.  And getting some excercise lugging the weights back home.

My best-ever single coin find, with the biggest profit margin ever was finding a 1955 Canadian one-cent, No Shoulder Fold.  The condition was VF.  Not believing what I had, I took the penny to show Bill Merkley (London Coin Centre in London, Ontario) and he confirmed using a loop that I had the real deal.  Back then, he actually offered me $80 for the 1 cent coin - which is like a 8000% return!!!!  I still have the coin in my collection today, and it's steadily increased in value since then.  :)

Other findings were lots of US Wheat pennies (oldest was a 1909 VDB), various Canadian pennies dated between 1937 to 1959, and a red, uncirculated, 1945 penny.

At that time, I also culled out all the US pennies since the exchange rate back then was something like $1.30 Canadian to $1 US... I had accumulated nearly $150 worth of US pennies worth and took it to Detroit to spend.

Just as we talk about not finding - I did find one today. Maybe I should wish for not finding some other stuff. I could get lucky. :)

Not spending for sure. On the other hand from a time perspective it would be cheaper to pay 8 bucks and get it of ebay. Not the same thrill.

And today I got four rolls of loonies and got 1 old 2012. A bit beaten up for this year's coin but nonetheless a 2012 oldie loonie. I saw 2012 on the reverse and I closed my eyes. Wow this is the first one I have handled

Since this thread started as what was found. I found a BU loonie from 1992. Not the one with the parliament and the family but the regular one with the date 1867-1992 printed on the reverse. I was thrilled with that more than the 2012 oldie. What are the odds?

Also was at Starbucks and in their tip jar they had all new 2012 pennies. I don't collect them but considering that they are going for a premium it looks like the banks are getting rid of their left over pennies.

What a world. Pennies lying in tip jar and othes charging almost a 10 times premium elsewhere.

Just noticed that roll of old toonies sold for $167+taxes on e-bay. Almost 4 times face value. Crazy coin collectors. :)

I don't know why 2012 cents are going for a premium, they shouldn't be as there is no reason. Its the final production of the cent but so what? There are lots of 2012 cents out there. Even in MS-60-MS-63 they should not be worth more than a few cents... in my opinion.
As for the 2012 original design $1 and $2, it will be very interesting to know what the actual qty minted of these are. I expect possibly a number <1,000,000 for both.

The average price that these dollars are going for are around $8 in MS-63 grade and about $5 in MS-60 grade. So if its a roll of MS-63's, don't be surprised if you see an asking price of up to $200.

The coins being sold in rolls are mint-packed rolls. Would they be considered MS-65?

I believe so as long as they are not removed from their original packaging.
