Looks like it to me.. Hey could u post two pics of two pennies one regular & one red... I would like to see the difference

Ok here goes...

The 1939 is red.  It's considered mint state.  Notice the amount of lustre.

The 1940 is circulated.  It is dark brown.

As coins are exposed to the air, they will slowly tone from a bright orange/red to a brown (hence the description RED/BROWN)

The presence of oils from skin or other contaminants will speed up this process.  If you look at recent coins, especially the plated ones, they appear more pink.  See the 3rd picture.

Thanks!  I only has to search through about 40,000 pennies to find it.     It was worth it though!  I wonder if I'll have to re-search all of them now that I'm learning about all of the magnetic/non-magnetic varieties...

heheh.... gotta thank you for starting this thread... I took a couple boxes of pennies before the 4th deadline and as you see I have sorted them by year... one year per container, then my hope is to make as many 1960 - present as possible. I know I will be able to make at least one 1938 - present selection... which I find kinda cool...

This has also motivated me to check out other coins. When I go the banks to swap bills I now often ask for any silver dollars and 50 cent pieces. Not for the silver content b/c most people only take the post '67 pieces in. But I find the 50 cent pieces to be facinating... we never really use them in common currency.  Plus I've managed to score a couple '74's with the missing S which made me pretty happy.

Very nice system you have there Shylo.  Better than my ziploc bags!    I do put the nicer coins into the paper holders, but I need to buy some more...They're on my shopping list for TOREX.

Anyway, you can still obtain pennies if you know where to look and who to ask.  Almost everyone wants to get rid of 'em so there should be a plentiful supply for some time for us pickers to scan for treasures...

Not much excitement today, no more pointed 5 1985 pennies yet...but I have MANY more rolls yet to explore.

On the topic of roll hunting, has anyone actually tried hunting nickel rolls?  If so, what have you found?  I don't imagine there would be much because of the RCM alloy recovery program...
