Coins picked from circulation

I was getting these and many other interesting coins in circulation, but that has definately changed since the Alloy Recovery Program came into play.  Most coinage is dreadfully boring now, with most coins being from the year 2000 or newer...

  Yup, they're a greedy bunch at the RCM.  In the last year or 2 I would search rolls of pennies (when I could still get them) and rolls of nickels from the bank every so often.  If I ever got machine wrapped rolls, they'd always be year 2000 and newer, nothing older in them.  I'd always try to get customer wrapped rolls which always had the good stuff.  But with the alloy recovery program going on in the last few years you can definitely tell the older stuff is harder to get even in those customer wrapped rolls.  If you take nickels for example, the pre 1981 ones (made of pure nickel) last year roughly 10% of the coins searched were these (for me).  In the last few months it's getting closer to around 5%.

Just picked up:
2 x 1988 $100 bills EF/AU condition

$40 worth of nickels... and a few pennies

I got a call from my favourite bank branch the other day saying they had 91 "old $10s without the security stripe" and asked if I wanted them.  I said sure, figuring they were likely 2001 series.  Maybe I might find an FEE or something, and the rest would be deposited again.

Turns out they were all 1954 modified $10s.  Most were in well circulated shape, but there were a few nicer ones.  Nothing AU or better though.

The next day was the local coin club meeting where I gave out dozens of them as change in our auction.  Anything left over at the end was available to members to exchange with me.

I still have the few nicer ones... Anyone want them?  PM me.  (Replies posted to this thread will be removed).

Yesterday, in $40 of nickels I found:

$27.25 plated coins from 2001-present
$11.15 in coins from 1959-1999

21 US nickels
55 cents  in 2005 V nickels

I picked up another $20 in nickels from a local store today...

They looked at me funny but they were relieved to get rid of them!  Anyone have any better luck with nickels?  I like to keep the ones up 'till 1981 for sure plus all of the commemoratives (except perhaps the 2002 jubilee coins simply because there are so many of them).

Anyway, here are the finds:

I have to say that nickel CRH is not as exciting as pennies, as there are fewer older interesting dates to be found.  Maybe I haven't looked through enough rolls yet!

I noticed that it is really different hunting nickels, because there are very few young Elizabeth coins to be found, never mind George VI dates...

The 1967 commemorative is really tough to find...This is only my 2nd one so far...

I really miss pennies

Keep peeling out those U.S. coins. At a 10-per-cent premium now (if you take them to the U.S.), they will soon pay for your time searching..

  I've been pretty busy recently so no coins searched in a while 

  Actually I still have the nickels I need to return from the last batch I searched a few weeks ago.  The results from those were a 56, 59, 63, 64, about 20-30 from 65-81 and a 2000p from 40$ searched.

  Completely forgot to post about these since this was around the holidays 

  But hopefully I'll get a chance to pick up some coins again soon!    In the meantime I'll keep reading your finds Dean!

Do you often find 2000P 5 cents? These are quite scarce in the last 14 years i have only found 3. Other 5 Cents to look out for 1977 low 7, 1990 "Bare belly" beaver and 1996 far 6 and if your really lucky 1964 with the extra water line.

I haven't yet found a 2000P and I didn't know about the other varieties.  I guess I'll have to keep a sharper eye out for them now!

BTW, today I received a new 2014 lucky loonie and a 100th Grey cup loonie in change!
