Coins picked from circulation

Today, picked up the new 2020 Bill Reid, Circulating $2 Coloured Coin, from my local RBC Bank Branch.  It is gorgeous!!!



The Royal Canadian Mint has launched a new toonie to commemorate the legacy of Haida artist Bill Reid, more than 20 years after his death.

The new $2 coin, which marks 100 years since Reid's birth, enters circulation Tuesday.


"The mint is delighted to add the story of Bill Reid's pivotal role in raising awareness of Haida art, and the traditions and culture it represents to the long list of circulation coins celebrating what makes us proud to be Canadian," said Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint in a written statement.

I want a roll, but none of my local banks have them... 

Visited 5 banks, spent two hours total in line and got 1 roll. I also got mine from the main RBC branch here. The very last roll they had.

Nice find! I'd be lucky to find any at a bank and if I do, the tellers will limit me to a couple rolls...

I picked up a roll of toonies today and I decided to search it.
I was surprised to see a wide range of dares spanning the entire lifespan of the toonie, from 1996-2021.

I picked out some coins with less than 20 million minted:

1997, 2001, 2013 and 2014.

I also found a regular polar bear reverse 2020 toonie.  I can’t find any mintage numbers for 2020.

Are any of these coins worth keeping?

I have been searching rolls of toonies since March.  I've returned all of the above - none of them are rare.

The ones to look out for include:

• 2017 Coloured Northern Lights
• 2018 Coloured Armistice
• 2012 pre-security
• Anything not produced specifically for circulation (ie: 2017 polar bear, proof and specimen coins, 1999 polar bear, etc.)

Also beware of counterfeits!  The "walrus" toonies that hit the news last week are really only found near the ON/QC border.  I don't expect them to spread much and I don't think terribly many have been released.  However, the much bigger issue is the "Camel Toe" toonies.  They're much, much closer to the real thing and there are millions of them in circulation in the GTA and the rest of southern Ontario (coast-to-coast actually, but in lower concentrations).  Check out CamelToeToonies.ca for more information.

Speaking of 2017 polar bears... I just found one in a roll.  It went back to the bank.
