I came across a new $20 with some serrations on the top edge. I have seen some posts here about this type of error(?) before, so I'm wondering if it is rare or common? They are unevenly spaced and do not go all the way across the note.

Here are the two threads that talked about serrated notes:

On rarity of these notes:

With your note I have seen 3 $100 notes with this condition, 1 $50 note with this condition and now your $20.

There was some discussion about this type of condition happening post-production of the note, perhaps even purposefully made. I have yet to see anyone replicate this type of condition using any of the available tools.

In my research so far the type of condition that has been reported in the 3 $100 notes cannot be easily replicated. It is plausible that the condition is either caused by some note handling equipment post-production or even by some note handling equipment prior to packaging and distribution.

I have been closely examining edge condition of polymer notes and there is some indication that there has been some issues during cutting of the notes.

On Value of this condition

It was stated by forum members perhaps with a lot more knowledge about valuation that such notes do not have any collector value.

In case you were thinking of getting more than face please PM me - but the picture first.

Wonder what paper money would say if it could talk?

Here is a close up shot of the $20. I'll try to up[oad a whole shot of it. I'm going to measure it; after reading the threads and seeing the $100 I'm curious if it is extra material left on the note or not. I got the note out of an ATM; it was part of a $100 withdrawal, and none of the other notes had anything similiar on them.

It would be awesome if you can share the serial number and also the close of the same location looking at the back of the note.

In particular do you see a sharp line with the white of the note showing where the serrations begin to separate from the main part of the note?

Thx

Ok, I've measured it and there looks to be 1 mm missing at the end of the note where the serrations are. The "full" end measures 70 mm and the other end is 69 mm. The serial number is BIT0791823. Interestingly the "3" in the serial number under the serrated edge is a tad lower than the "3" in the serial number at the full end. I'll post some more pictures.
