Hi,

I was just thinking about all of the phrases that exist that contain "pennies".  Now that they are about to leave our daily lives, I thought it would be fun to list some of them and their revised versions...

Examples I can think of are:

"In for a penny, in for a pound" becomes "In for a NICKEL, in for a pound"

"A penny for your thoughts?"  becomes "A NICKEL for your thoughts?"

"I'd like to give my two cents"  becomes "I'd like to give my "FIVE cents"

"He's so cheap, he'd steal the pennies off of a dead man's eyes" becomes
"He's so cheap, he'd steal the NICKELS off of a dead man's eyes"

The Lyrics to an old English song I learned in music class as a kid:

Christmas is coming
The goose is getting fat
Please put a penny (NICKEL) in the old man's hat
If you haven't got a penny (NICKEL),
Then a ha'penny will do  (When was the last time you heard about half-pennies?)
If you haven't got a ha'penny
Then God bless you!

Can anyone think of more?

After I polish my nickel loafers, I'll read my kid the story about Chicken Little and Henny Nickel.  Then I'll watch The Big Bang on TV to see if Leonard and Nickel are still dating.

Paraphrasing a Lionel Richie song from the 1980s:

Nickel lover, don't walk on by
Nickel lover, don't you make me cry

I'm so broke, I don't even have 2 cents TEN cents to rub together...

He was a penny NICKEL pinching old miser...

Somehow these phrases don't sound quite right...

A penny NICKEL saved is a penny NICKEL earned

That must have cost a pretty penny NICKEL   :D

See a penny NICKEL, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck!

I never go anywhere without my lucky pennyNICKEL

See saw, Margery Daw
Johnny shall have a new master
He shall have but a penny NICKEL a day
Because he can't work any faster

See?  even little Johnny got a raise!  LOL   :D

    Simple Simon met a pieman,
    Going to the fair;
Says Simple Simon to the pieman,
    Let me taste your ware.

Says the pieman to Simple Simon,
    Show me first your penny NICKEL;
Says Simple Simon to the pieman,
    Indeed I have not any.

Damn, now pies cost more  :)

He was a penny NICKEL pinching old miser...

Indeed.  When he croaked he didn't leave his family one red cent white nickel.  Truth is, he blew his fortune on penny nickel stocks.

Just thought the rest of this poem needed modification too!  :)

Before 1922 there were no nickles.  The 5 cent silver coins were referred to as "fish scales".
So bending the time space continuum had the penny been eliminated before 1922 the common penny saying would have morphed into:

"a fish scale for your thoughts"
"a fish scale saved is a fish scale earned"
"fish scales from heaven"
etc etc
