I came across a journey series $5 note which is two plies. The two plies are separated the full height of the note (the full 2.75 inches or 69mm). The separation has occured from the edge closest to the FPN i.e if you look at the front of the note it would be the left edge. The separation goes all the way about 1/2 inch.

The back portion of each ply is completely white. You can see the intaglio printing "Banque Du Canada Bank of Canada" on inside of each ply.

I thought that the notes was once piece of paper unlike the polymer which is known to be 2 plies.

Am I dreaming?

I am trying to figure out the best way to put up a photo. But maybe this is nothing new? Has this been reported before? Is there an image of the two plies somewhere?

Wonder what paper money would say if it could talk?

If you are talking about the note being pulled apart (front and Back), I have seen this before. I have a note in my collection somewhere that is partially pulled apart. I cannot find the note, so I cannot post an image.

Here we go - What surprises me is that there is no transfer of ink onto the back of the paper. But look at that intaglio printing transferring through.

I believe we are talking about the same thing. I posted a picture. I would never have thought that this note could peel out into two layers like this.

I have heard of notes being split in two this way when pressed with a steam iron by enthusiastic note doctors.  Serves 'em right!

I have heard of notes being split in two this way when pressed with a steam iron by enthusiastic note doctors.  Serves 'em right!

That's interesting. Good to know.

But serves 'em right for what?  :(

Has anyone tried to make money with this type of doctoring? Are there any known images showing such splitting?

Darn I am willing to pay for a doctored note. Here is my offer:

$2.50 - For pointing me to any official document (by BoC or by Charlton Press)  that states that the journey series notes are two plies (not including the GOG note with polymer interply)
$5 - For selling 4800 pixel high resolution images (of all four faces) with two plies completely separated of any denomination - YES money just for the images and copyright to use them :)

$15 for the two plies of $10 denomination journey (security) note with two plies completely separated across the whole length/width.

$25 - As above but with all the intaglio imprint showing on the insides of both the plies.

$50 - As above and a demonstration showing me how to repeatedly separate the notes using a steam iron ( I supply the additional notes).

PM me if you are interested and I am really serious.

Regardless of how this may have happened/done/doctored I was really excited to see this because it talks to a design feature that I have not seen mentioned in any document.

So all you note doctors get your steam irons rolling - If the above is not commensurate with your efforts let me know your price. :)

My offer regarding the two plies of the journey notes comes with conditions. One of them being that I am only interested in one quantity of the item mentioned in my offer. Please PM me or post here if you what I am looking for and are interested in my offer.

Thank you :)

Yes my note is the same as the one pictured, and a $10 as well.
Mine is also only partially separated like yours.

Still can't find it to post photos. :(

The separation is so neat that I am calling it two plies. But is it really made as two plies or is just separating out this way? The feel of the inside surface is so different than the feel on the outside surface. The fact that no ink has penetrated into the surface is also very intriguing.

If someone had two plies completely separated I would certainly be interested in buying it. It would tell us so much about how the watermark was created for instance. I did some research on the type of paper that was supposedly used to make these notes and no where is there mention of two plies.

Very very intriguing. Although these notes are on their way out this finding is certainly going to be cherished.

Anyone else seen something like this then would love to hear from you.

Would have loved to see it. Did you get a chance to actually feel and see the inside surface? I still cannot understand how the ink does not show up on the inside? I would have thought that at least some ink would permeate through. I wonder if they somehow coat the paper before they apply the ink.

I have noticed that there is some coating on the paper but I always thought that it was put there after the printing was completed sort of to give the note more durability.

Thanks a million.

I am still amazed that the ink particularly the intaglio and the numbers does not get to back of the ply and into the white middle portion.

Very interesting.
