You can meet the designer of the coin, Emily Damstra, at the 2013 O.N.A. Convention in Kitchener, Ontario, April 19-21.  More info at http://www.the-ona.ca/2013

They were also distributed to the public in 5-Pack Packs via RCM website. Here's a pic of the ones I have

If i remember correctly they were selling them for face value ($5) and tax exempt. They sold out very quickly.

I would surprised if there was 5m issued, as I have only seen a couple of these in circulation and every time I ask at the bank, no one has heard of these. I think they are going to prove to be pretty scarce.

5,000,000 is the correct mintage number... from the info. that i have. Keep in mind that this also includes all the circulation sets (ex. 5 pack) and rolls issued for collectors so not all 5,000,000 were actually circulated. This means that you won't find many out there. Other dates that are fairly difficult to find are the 2002 Loon dollar, both 2003's, 2004 Loon dollar and of course the 2012 old design.

In our area they are about as scarce as the grey cup loonie or the Canada Parks loonie. But I do seem them often enough.

Wonder what paper money would say if it could talk?

If I am not mistaken, this coin probably has more mintage then the following loonies:

1992 double dated loon reverse
2002 regular
2003 regular (both portrait combined)
2004 regular
2010 Sask RoughR

and about the same mintage as

2011 Parks Canada
2012 Grey Cup

Also watch out for errors in that coin. Some interesting broken die errors around the water below the bird.
