As a relative beginner in the hobby can someone tell me how important the registry/SNDB is?

Is it our duty to submit serial numbers?  How far should someone take it, should everything be entered or just the high end or more rare notes?

The Serial Number Database is the fusion of several key initiatives:
   1) Tracking of highs and lows for each prefix
   2) Tracking changeovers
   3) Tracking replacement note ranges
   4) Collecting data for research purposes

"Duty" is a rather strong word... It makes it sound like a job or a requirement.  All notes entered to the SNDB are entered voluntarily by members of this site.  Your contributions help all of the above four initiatives.  Every note counts, and every one is appreciated.

We encourage all members to enter all of their notes (exceptions are for notes in sequential runs; see (1), (2) and (3)).  Even if your note is not near a high, low, replacement range or changeover, it helps fill in those "in between" areas.  This is important because if something comes up later, such as a new variety, etc., that data will help us figure out what's going on.

With all the good stuff that SNDB does I must say that it also allows you to identify specific prefix-serial numbers you may be looking for.

I have had a situation where a note I entered was on a want list of some other member and the SNDB prompted me with that request.

I was going to put the note back into circulation but was happy to pass it on to another member who saw value in it.

One more good thing about the SNDB

Another question I have is, once someone gets to a certain ranking are you able to see who has submitted what number of notes? Right now its blocked for me.

Also what profession are some of you that you have access to that many notes...impressive.

It is blocked as a privacy measure following feedback received when the SNDB was in its early days.

The only way to see how many notes someone has is if they use a signature tag like you and I do.  Even then however, it does not give the exact number of notes.

Regarding the high and low notes - I was wondering what if any value it has from a collection point of view? I realize that very low <100 serial numbered notes fetch a premium but does having a note which is listed as a high or low in the SNDB have any premium? What about a note which is just a few numbers higher or lower than that listed in the low-high listing in SNDB?

In short I am really asking if these are worth hanging on to?

There appears to be a collector for everything, so I think if you have any highs or lows that you don't want post them on the trading post and see if there is interest. You never know

I notice if you enter a note into the DB it will tell you if its a radar or the lowest note found to date etc.

Will it tell you if one of your notes is a replacement? Or would you have to look that up?

Just wanted to say if anyone has not entered notes into the database, I would recommend it. It's very rewarding in lots of ways. Try it.
