Could you post a scan of the note?

I suppose it could be an error note where the second digit in the serial number machine rotated to "4", but this likely wouldn't happen with both sets of serial numbers.

Maybe someone clever took a pen and made "51" look like "54"?  Can't tell...need to see a scan.

That's possible, but very strange. Never heard of any 54... prefix before. Yes please provide a scan. A likely possibility is that its a fake $20 note.  Could be an error, if so then only one side would be 54... and the other side would be either 50, 52 or 56.

Not possible. If it had been a 51, then it would be 5100.... as these were replacement notes so if someone did want to change the 1 to a 4 then the real serial number would be 511.... which just doesn't exist.

Sorry for delay,

Work is work. I post here the better scan I was able to do. Hope it is OK for you to analyze; if no I will ask a friend to do one much better.

Thanks,

The scan is a little washed out, so it's tough to make any sort of determination.  The writing at the top of the note is curious.  It could be a Quebec license plate.  Are you certain that the note itself is authentic?

Could you post a scan of the front. What signatures are on this 20? Its very weird to see such a prefix. What worries me is that in 35 years its the first ever reported '54', its quite possible its a counterfeit.

In my opinion I think its fake. When notes are copied some of the microprinting does not come through. For example when looking at the queens eyes in the scan the color is more of a solid blur instead of the micro rings seen in a real note. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Well I'll put my two penneth in and concur here, I think it's a fake too.  Not only because I don't see the concentric rings when looking at the Queen's eyes, but I also don't see a single green planchette, which I agree could have been copied on a fake too, but the complete absence of any planchettes raises a red flag for me.

Do you know the story about the pencil writing on the back of the note? It looks like a Quebec license plate number.
