Bank of Canada to issue a commemorative bank note marking the historic reign of Queen Elizabeth II

18 May 2015

As announced by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Bank of Canada will contribute to the Government of Canada’s plans to commemorate the historic reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by issuing a commemorative bank note in 2015.

Commemorative Polymer Series $20 Note (2015)

On 9 September 2015, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest-reigning sovereign in Canadian history, exceeding the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.

To mark this historic reign, the Bank of Canada will issue a special commemorative bank note in 2015. The note will be a variation of the existing $20 polymer bank note that already features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The variation will incorporate a special mention of Her Majesty’s reign.

This commemorative note will be publicly unveiled and issued this fall. It will have the same level of security as all other notes in the Polymer series. More information will be available at that time.

Circulation and Distribution
This commemorative bank note will be issued into general circulation and distributed through Canada’s financial institutions.

The Bank is working with financial institutions to ensure that the notes will be available to Canadians across the country. The Bank will issue 40 million commemorative notes. To put this in perspective, there are over 800 million $20 notes in circulation in Canada. The current $20 note will continue to be issued and represent the vast majority of $20s in circulation for the life of the Polymer series.

Both the current Polymer series $20 note and the commemorative note will have full face value.

Wow, that is a surprise. Nearly fifty years since the last commemorative Bank of Canada note, and now we will be getting two in the next two years.

Nice! And in 2017 a 150th anniversary commemorative note will hit circulation. Not bad!

Based on prefixes that have been put out:

BIE to BIZ - 18 x 10 million = 180
FIL to FIZ - 12 x 10 million = 120
BSA to BSZ - 22 x 10 million = 220
FSA to FSZ - 22 x 10 million = 220
FVA to FVZ - 22 x 10 million = 220
FWA to FWC 3 x 10 million = 30

That is already close to a billion notes based on current prefixes.

Assuming that some are taken out of circulation (remembering that polymers have 2.5 times the life of paper)

How much room does this leave room for more prefixes for non-commemorative issues?

From the Currency Conference presentation by the BoC, it seem that they are launching a new analytics capabilities, by capturing data using the:

1.   Single Note Inspection Process at the printing facilities;
2.   Bank of Canada Agency Operations Centres (AOCs):  The AOCs in Montréal (MAOC) and Toronto/Mississauga (TAOC) verify the authenticity of bank notes, destroy poor-quality notes, manage inventory reserves at various regional distribution points across Canada and provide support to clients (regional distribution centres/financial institutions);
3.   Financial Institution's cash processing centres.

What this entails:  BoC wants to track the flow of bank notes, enabling them to use correlation analysis, and for the BoC to better understand the flow of bank notes across the country between financial institutions.

As a result, the $20 Commemorative Note Issue is being used as a Pilot Proposal for this new data capturing process (by implementing new techniques using BA International).

The BoC will have real-time quality assessment, and circulation performance of it's supply chain.   The currency data used will provide BoC will timely data information on note flows to support counterfeit deterrence, circulation data can be linked to postal code/census data.  It can also provide estimate income by regional note flows, and estimate unreported income.   There will be a better understanding of national note flows and impact on quality of polymer notes.

The BoC is data mining using the currency's serial numbers, and are using the $20 commemorative polymer note as a pilot for this new process.

Again thx for sharing. From my research using variety of sources the BoC has been experimenting with this idea for a long time. Since 2013 detailed information on every new note is captured through the SNI (Single Note Inspection) process.

They are now going a step further whereby there will be gates at distribution centres like regional banks or regional distribution centres where they will also capture information such as the serial number.

Come to think of it I wonder if the $20 Commemorative Note Issue is the right one to use for data capturing. I would have thought that many of these would be held on as keepsake at least for sometime. Unless of course they want to figure out which region have the most collectors :-)

What are the chances that this note will begin circulating tomorrow? Reading the press release it appears that the new note will be unveiled at 1:30 pm. I don't think any bank even if they had the notes for distribution will give them out before that time.

It would seem Thursday at the earliest.

The new $20 is expected to hit circulation Wednesday September 9 but any banks that will receive shipments would probably not be aloud to release them before a certain time.
