Looks like this video just got posted to YouTube last week.  In it, the frosted maple leaf is presented as a cool feature of Canadian banknotes that you can look at with a laser pointer or even the lights from a Christmas tree.

I hope this helps anyone who has been particularly struggling to figure out how use that feature.
