I recently was at Toronto's Coin Expo (held at Toronto's Reference Library on April 22).  I was talking to several dealers and they informed me that the Bank of Canada will be selling some of the bank notes in an auction style format, similar to that in the 1990s when Chuck Moore conducted the auction on the Bank's behalf.  Has anyone else heard this news?  This is the first, I have heard of this.

According to the Bank of Canada

Good day Mike,

The Bank of Canada currently has no plans to auction bank notes from its National Currency Collection.

We thank you for your interest in Canadian currency.

Sincerely,

Well I guess that squashes the rumours.

Not necessarily; the BoC response specifically says it has "no plans to auction bank notes from its National Currency Collection." Maybe it has other notes not in the NCC that may be headed to auction.

Let the rumors continue...

Thanks for looking into this and the comments.  The two dealers that were talking about this are prominent dealers.  I haven't heard anything from my sources, so not sure where they received their news.

OK, in that line of thinking then, perhaps they have no plans to auction any banknotes, but rather they're going to hold a sweepstakes lottery and GIVE them away to 100 lucky Canadians!  Let the rumours continue!
