How to find POP report on various Prefixes (2003 $10 BEL)

Hi,

So for certain notes its quite simple enough to search PMG to get a general idea of how rare a banknote is.  Unfortunately in some cases searching pick 63c doesn't reveal much since there are multiple Prefixes involved.  So BEL is rare but how rare is it?  Im coming up against this issue often.  Yes the price guide shows its the most valuable 2003 $10 Banknote but again that doesn't delve into the numbers.  Whats a good way to find out how rare a prefix really is?  IS this something that the Serial number DB can help with?  Are there other resources available?

Ok so I may have answered my own question.  I just looked at the SN DB and it says that 52 BEL prefixs have been reported.  So its not as rare as we thought?  There are other prefixs that sell for far less that have half of the reported numbers.  What am I missing here?

With several dominant third party graders its hard to rely on PGM census info alone. While they may have graded a few its usually only a small piece of the pie.

The CPMS note registry is certainly your best bet yet there are still several series or banks missing.

I have started a few of my own and found it quite easy to source out the information through Icollector, Heritage and a few others which keep detailed images of all past auctions.

These were odd times as the 2003 BEK, BER (& to a much lesser extent BEP) all seemed to have SN ranges released, rather than full runs.  The BOC were concerned that the original Journeys were being photocopied in record numbers & officials wanted them replaced ASAP. Whether they were recalled or simply had less # released, is unclear.  With change-overs or short prefixes, word gets out & they're actively sought after.  This was not the case for the regular BEL prefix (& the so-called 10M release) caught most collectors by surprise

Now, when it comes to Book Value (BV) of any prefix you also have to factor in collector demand & the BEL became a "hot" prefix to acquire amongst collectors. There were a lot of collectors, including myself, hunting for one at the time.* Buying one in high grade, has only got harder as the years passed (thus the BV continually rising).  In fact, I can tell you that 2 of the 52 in the SNDB were from my collection.

On CCF "selectcoincanada" posted how he had wavy paper (& other imperfections) on his 2003 BEK notes.  Many collectors noticed these as did BCS.  I got a few BEP with an UNC63 grade since they're UNC but have these minor imperfections, so its pretty tough to get a high grade with some of the 2003 tougher prefixes too.

Interesting.  I wasnt aware that there was rampant counterfeiting with that series of $10's.  Im on the hunt for some of the rarer prefix's of late.  But they can be quite elusive as you already know.    Ive looked a some of the other prefixs from 63c and some are rare enough to warrant having them in my collection.

I didnt see anything in regards to the BEL prefix.  I might have an older edition.  Can you confirm if there is any info on that prefix.

Check out this article https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/counterfeit-plague Many forum participants were acutely aware that the Original Journey were considered secuirty flawed & would be phased out. Many collectors hated the series yet collector interest remained high since the spike in bogus notes were red-flags signalling an upgrade.

- If you like the Original Journey $10 then you should consider the FDY (another short prefix that caught everyone off guard). It books higher than my favourite the 2001 Knight-Dodge FEE prefix (only 480,000 printed).  I (happily) got one of these years ago & am still surprised at how low the BV remains on this seldom offered (seen) prefix.

I also found the regular 2003 BEK prefix (non-insert) much harder to come by then the inserts (which were sold much more often than the regular prefix). BV has caught up with this one but again- they're hard to come by. When everyone was scrambling to complete their tough prefix collection the 2003 BER was just as rare as the BEL.  A few years later it was reported that someone had a bundle of them (out west) and their BV dropped like a stone. The BV has dropped from about $700 or $800 and has then remained constant in the past 4-5 years.

The story of the 2003 BER, for me, is similar to the last prefixes of the 2011 Macklem-Carney Fives.  We all knew that the 2011 M-C HAE $5 change over would be rare.  We only saw them sporadically in QC & very seldom did any high grade notes come to auction.  However, I feel the same can be said for the prefixes HAH, and the short HAL.  We saw some HAJ/HAK but they're pretty tough too.  The most common are HAF & HAG but even these are about as tough as the BEP yet they remain inexpensive in Charlton.  This is why you won't see them for sale (b/c collectors know they're pretty tough but Charlton stubbornly refuses to acknowledge how tough with low BV's).  Speaking of Fives, the 2004 HOH $5 was the only tough Original Five that I can remember being hard to come by.  Charlton now notes that this note has a high number of HOH0187763 being reported but the BV certainly isn't in keeping with a note has less than 200,000 issued. You be the judge but I think this is another tough one to come by (& very collectible).

Very interesting stats "AL-Bob." Thanks for posting those specifics.
Keep in mind, however, that the BEK (2002- 2003) & BER (2003-2004) were year change-over prefixes, so it's 2003 BEK Serial Numbers above 8.6M that were tough -many of the # you have posted will be from reams of inserts & not regular (non insert) SN (which are the most scarce banknotes to come by). The SN (inserts) between 9.315M -9.405M were considered the most common while the inserts from the higher range 9.495M- 9..675M were considered less common.

For the 2003 BER SN below 7.2M were the ones that became tough to find. The 6.48M range (from Edmonton) were the numbers that put a large supply of these 2003 BER into question. If one is to scrutinize the list of BEL one sees that a similar pattern emerges from the same member at 6.70M.  It seems odd that Charlton has stuck to their guns re: the BEL as being the most scarce of the "lost prefixes" since this chart implies that they're likely just as uncommon as the 2003 BER.
