March 9th:  Weekend coin hunt update:

On Saturday, I visited my local bank and I bought a bunch of coin rolls.
One of the dime roll papers was this vintage green type.  I have found this type of coin tube before and there were only modern coins in it but I still get excited when I see these types of wrappers.

Well, the hunt paid off because I got a fair share of US coins, a UK 5 pence coin, 25c from Barbados, a 12-sided nickel and best of all, another 1968 silver dime!

March 9th finds:

Today after work, I went to 2 banks.  The first bank actually had some paper bills!
I managed to get four nice birds $100s, one 1979 $20 and five 1969 $20s.

The second bank offered me 48 rolls of pennies.  The teller was almost ready to ship them out so I got there just in time!  The person who deposited the pennies used nickel rolls to wrap a few rolls of pennies.

March 15th:
Weekend coin hunt.

I secured some coin rolls this weekend, but I wish that the results were better.
Aside from a few US coins, there was nothing much to report, other than a really nice 1959 nickel and a $5 coin from Taiwan.

I also managed to score two journey $5s and a roll of pennies.

To add insult to injury, seven of the quarter rolls were short by one coin so I lost money on this hunt.

I find short rolls are increasingly common when I buy coins.  Are people really that desperate these days?

Today, I “rescued” some notes that somebody in front of me in line at the bank was going to deposit.

March 18th:  Main Branch Madness…And more!

Today, I made my rounds to the main branches of all of the banks.  Three Main Branch banks paid out; the other main branches (I’m looking at you, BMO, and CIBC) never give out anything.

I was pleasantly surprised!

The first bank let me pick through the entire mutilated pile.  I took all of the $1s, $2s, $5s and $10s that they had plus a few crisp journey $20s and a birds $50.

The teller even offered me a big dollar coin, so I took that too.  🤣

The second main bank gave me 70 cents in loose change…free of charge.

The third bank had no paper money, but they did offer me $1.37 in pennies, so I graciously accepted them!

On my way home, I stopped at my local branch and I asked for my usual order of rolled coins.  To my surprise, they had no customer wrapped coins today, but the Head Teller did offer me four $1 notes and a birds $2!

It was a good day today!

March 19th finds:

Two banks, two scores!

Today, I visited two banks.  The first bank gave me a birds $20 and $100 in quarters (there was nothing worth mentioning in these rolls).  The second bank gave me $242 worth of big nickel dollars and 50c pieces, plus almost $40 worth of US coins!

The manager at the second bank also gave me a bunch of pennies.  Some of them were BU red coins; I suspect that they were cut out of mint sets.  The pennies brought to the bank because they aren’t accepted at stores, the nickels probably spent and the silver coins scrapped and melted.

It is truly a shame that people would destroy these sets and scrap the silver.  People need to see past the dollar signs and keep these sets intact for future generations.

I have never seen a TTC transit box before. I live in Toronto and I take the TTC a lot so I often pay with cash when I go to work but my dimes and other coins I deposit onto the bus fare box must be in that transit box you have .

Also Dean, is this your first time finding a TTC Transit Box before? If not what type of coins do you find in those transit box? I wonder what people deposit old dated coins, silver coins, coloured coins, etc... into the fare box.

I have obtained several boxes of dimes labelled as TTC deposits.  Unfortunately, the coins in these boxes had very few finds in them and I have never found any silver in TTC boxes.  Generally, I avoid machine wrapped coin rolls.

If you order a box of coins in advance, it is highly likely that you will get a box of machine wrapped ARP rolls or brand new coins from the Royal Canadian Mint.

March 23rd:  CoinStar payout!

Today on my way out of the grocery store, I saw a bunch of coins in the CoinStar reject tray.  There was no silver, but I did get a handful of copper coins including a 1956D US wheat penny, a 1 pfennig coin from Germany, a 1 Euro cent coin, also from Germany and a recently obsolete Toronto transit token.

The oldest coin was a King George VI penny from 1941.

It’s always nice to get free money!

Nice! I love finding money on the street! Or indeed in a vending machine. (Don't think we have such a thing as CoinStar over in Europe? Edit: it seems we do. In the UK. In The Netherlands or Germany I have never come across one at least)

One small correction: The Euro cent you found is from Austria, not Germany

I think there was a class action law suit against CoinStar a few years ago because the count from the machines was inaccurate.  After that alot of the machines were removed.

March 30th:
Weekend coin hunt update.

I picked up a bunch of coins and hunted through them over the weekend.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to report other than a fair share of US coinage.

This past week, I searched through a lot of coins.
I was lucky, because I was able to find a fair share of US coinage, plus a King George V nickel from 1929, and two silver dimes; one from 1963 and another from 1967!
