May 13th coin hunting finds:

I went back to the bank that had given me rolls of dimes containing silver and once again, they did not disappoint!

In $100 worth of dimes I found:
Three colour 2021 dimes
$1.10 in US dimes
Four 1968 nickel alloy dimes
And best of all, another 1939 dated silver dime!

Silver coins are still out there!

May 13th find:

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

While running some errands this evening, I walked by an apartment complex in my neighbourhood that had a lot of garbage at the curb.  Garbage day is Wednesday, so normally I wouldn’t think anything about the boxes of trash and household junk in these boxes, but something stuck out;  I saw the Canadian coat of arms on a cardboard box and immediately, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

I was delighted to see that it was a case for a 1967 coin set, but what was even better was that there were coins inside of the case!. Sadly (but not unexpectedly) there was no $20 gold piece in the set.  🤣

But finding free coins is always a thrill, especially when some of them are silver!  Why would anybody throw coins into the garbage?

The question is:  Do I leave it as-is?  Do I replace the tarnished coins with better examples?  Do I complete the set by buying a 1967 $20 gold coin?

UH-OH! It was probably someone’s moving day and you walked away with their coins.

Today was your lucky day! I imagined if they threw away  the set that also included the gold coin and it went to the landfill  but at least you saved it from the garbage. One man's trash is another man's treasure. But I did some research about the golden $20 coin and I see the melt value is $1400 but it sells upwards from 2.5k to 2.7k which is very expensive but if you have the money then I would buy it.

May 17th update:  A last minute banknote rescue!

On Wednesday, I stopped in to one of my banks.  When I asked about paper money, the teller said that he had “a lot of old bills”.  He pulls out a stack of mostly $1s and $2s; and asked if I wanted them because he was just about to ship them out.

Of course I took them all…Then the teller said that he had some “other bills”.  He pulls out another stack of mutilated notes and proceeds to sort out all of the paper notes.

I took everything without question because the bank was about to close.  Later, I took a closer look at the bills and saw that the 1954 $100 is a devil’s face note!  Unfortunately, it has some staple holes, but how often does a devil’s face $100 pop up for face value?

The $1s are nice, crisp notes and within the bundle, there were two replacement notes!  (The $1s are not a consecutive bundle; they are mixed prefixes).  Aside from that, the 1974 $2s are really nice and unfortunately, there were no large B birds $2s this time.

Most likely, this is a collection dump after an estate settlement because there are some runs of notes that are missing every other number as if they were distributed in an alternating fashion.

To top it all off, the teller gave me three rolls of pennies for free!

May 17th:
It’s dime time!

After finding all of those bills on Wednesday, I decided to gather some more coin rolls…I managed to accumulate $300 worth of dimes before the Victoria Day holiday.

May 18th coin hunting update:

The $300 worth of dimes contained some treasures, including:
$1.90 in US dimes
Several 2021 bluenose under sail dimes
A Cayman Islands 5c coin
Two five pence coins from the UK
A 10c coin from the East Caribbean States
A couple of 1969 dimes
Six 1968 nickel alloy dimes, one of which was attacked by a pair of tin snips!
But, best of all, there were two silvers; 1949 and a nice lustrous 1968 that looks like it was broken out of a set.

Interestingly, the obverse of the 1949 dime has a strong legend, but the effigy of the King is weak.  Is this a typical wear pattern or is it a weak strike?

May 19th finds:
ATM treasures!

I went to the bank machine today to get some cash and out pop not one, but two interesting notes.

The first is a low serial number note FYU0000778

And the second note is a near solid FYN8888488

So close to a solid radar…

May 20th finds:
More ATM magic!

I stopped by one of my favourite banks to pick up some rolled dimes.  While I was there, I withdrew some cash.  One of the $20s that came out of the machine was a broken ladder serial number! FYF 1523476

Let’s see if the luck continues with the coins.

May 20th coin hunt update:

The rolled dimes I brought home today contained:

$1.50 in US dimes
Three 2021 bluenose under sail dimes
A UK 5 pence coin
An East Caribbean States 10 cent coin
Two mystery coins (is that Arabic on the coins?)
1991 and 1990 dimes
And most interestingly, an old threepence coin from New Zealand, 1947.  Of course, this is just one year removed from being 50% silver.

May 21st:
Today, I went to one of my banks and there were new tellers working the desk.  I asked for customer rolled coins after being told that they had no paper money.

I was only able to obtain five rolls of dimes, quarters and nickels.  Maybe because the tellers didn’t know who I was, they decided to limit how much coin I could have.

At least I didn’t leave empty handed.

After searching the rolls, there were very few finds.  Aside from 85 cents in US coins and a couple of nickel alloy nickels, the highlight of the night is an old pre-decimal sixpence coin from the UK dated 1966.

Sometimes you have to take what you can get…
