June 1st:  Update, part 1.

I finally searched the rolled coins that I brought home on May 29th.  This lot looked like a collection dump; I got over half a roll of 1973 RCMP quarters, coins from Barbados, the UK, and the Bahamas.

I also pulled some 1968 nickel alloy dimes, a couple of 1992 provincial quarters, and $1.25 in US coins.

No silver in this lot, unfortunately.

June 1st update, part 2.

Yesterday, I stopped by one of my banks.  They had a few paper notes for me which I gladly took.  There was one nice journey $5 that could have been in AU condition but it was mutilated by ATM roller marks.  ☹️

I was able to get a couple of journey $20s and $35 in pennies as well.

While I was there, I bought some more dimes and quarters to search.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found:

A French Franc coin from 1960
A couple of RCMP quarters and a couple of provincial quarters too.
$1.45 in US coin
A couple of 1997 dimes and a 1990
A colour 2021 dime
And best of all,two silver dimes, a 1967 and 1968!

There are treasures to be found if you look hard enough for them!

June 7th finds:

I was busy hunting coins this week.  One of my banks had a huge number of rolled dimes and quarters, so I bought all of it.  This is what came out of $450 worth of dimes and $300 of quarters:

Along with the more common finds of 1992 provincial quarters, 1968 nickel alloy dimes, and US coinage, I was able to pick out a silver dime from 1962, and two silver quarters, 1954 and 1968!

I was also surprised to see a couple of 1971 dated quarters…Not a date that I come across very often.

I think I’ll go back to that bank and see if they have more coins.  They also gave me 22 rolls of pennies and a few paper notes!

June 7th finds, continued.

Here are the paper bills that the bank gave me yesterday.

This journey $5 looks like it is printed out of register.  You can see that it is off centre and that the print date and issue date are almost cut off.

Is this note a keeper?

Nice find! Not sure of value but I would keep it as an interesting oddity.

June 9th finds and mail call:
I went to one of my banks yesterday and picked up some rolled coins since they did not have any paper money.

I got some nickel rolls for the first time in a long time.

I was pleased to find:

22 nickel bullion nickels, including two lustrous 1964 dated nickels.
$1.45 in US coins, including two 2024P nickels.
Another 1971 dated quarter
A 1973 mountie quarter
Two 1968 nickel alloy dimes
10 convertible centavos from Cuba
20 centavos from Mexico
A coin from Thailand (at least I think it is…)
A 1983 nickel.

After searching these coins, I finally got to look through a strap of 100 circulated $1 notes that I bought from a coin shop.

June 12th:
Paper score!

Yesterday, I went to my favourite local bank where a lot of my silver coins come from.
I bought a load of rolled coins and as usual, I always ask for paper money.  This bank has consistently refused to sell me any mutilated notes, but this time, the teller said “we’ve had some notes forever.  I was going to ship them out, but I keep forgetting”. 

All in all, there were $66 worth of paper bills, most of them are nice crispy $1s and $2s, but to my surprise, there was one 1954 $10, $5 and a 1967 $1.

I will update once I hunt the coins.

June 13th coin hunt update:

I hunted the rolled coins I brought home the other day.  Sadly, this bunch of rolls had no silver, but I was able to find:

$1.25 in US coins, the highlights being a nickel from 1959 and a nice shiny 1965 clad dime.
A few nice shiny Canadian nickels and dimes, including a nice 1965 and a few 1991 dimes.

A coin from the Czech Republic was all I found out of the quarter rolls…

I’ve found lots of 1968 nickel alloy dimes.  It’s surprising that there are so many of them still circulating after 57 years.  Compare their longevity to the poorly made, disposable coins that the RCM cranks out today which rust away within 1-2 years.

There’s always a chance that I could find a 1969 large date dime one day…

June 13th finds:
Silver!

I went to one of my banks on the way home. The teller didn’t have any paper money for me but she did offer me ten rolls of dimes and a whole box of nickels.  Interestingly, the nickel box was sealed and dated Jan 18th 2023.  The teller said it was sitting in their vault “for a long time”.

This ties into a discussion in another thread about the decline in the use of cash.  The banks are not distributing as much coin to the public as they used to, especially low denomination coins like nickels and dimes.

The dime rolls all had someone’s account number written on them (not photographed due to privacy reasons).  This is a telltale sign of an elderly customer who rolled up some coins and put their account number on the rolls to make sure that the money went into the correct account.  🤣🤣🤣

Well, I have to thank this person for doing that, because I found:

Two five pence coins from the UK
A few 1968 nickel alloy dimes, and…
A 1967 silver dime with nice toning!

I’ll hunt the nickels later…

June 15th update:
I hunted the box of nickels I brought home the other day.  Out of that box came the following:

$5.25 worth of nickel bullion coins.
One 2000p nickel
Ten 2005 V nickels
One 1962 12 sided nickel
Two 1963s
40 cents worth of US nickels
And one 1967 rabbit nickel.

June 15th:
Yesterday, I picked up some more dimes and quarters from my local bank.

The quarters were a complete bust, not even containing any commemorative coins.
The dime rolls were light on finds too…
Three 1968 nickel alloy dimes…
$2.30 in US dimes…
And one 1997 dime.

No silver this time…

June 17th finds:
Back on the silver!

Today, I went to one of my banks on the way home from work.
They did not have any paper money, but the teller did give me $15 in big nickel dollars and 50c pieces plus 16 rolls of pennies.

I figured that I’d ask for some rolled quarters and dimes.  The teller gave me 11 rolls or quarters and 8 rolls of dimes. 

The quarters were rusty crusty corroded coins, but interestingly, most of them were commemoratives.
I was able to get $1 in US quarters plus a bunch of 1973 mountie quarters.  But, best of all, there was a 1968 silver quarter in the mix!. Another highlight is a nice shiny 1969 business strike quarter.

June 19th finds:

I went to one of my banks today and I picked up a ton of customer rolled coins.

I also managed to get a journey $50 note and a birds $20 plus three rolls of pennies.

The quarter rolls gave up $2 in US coins, a mountie quarter, and some really nice millennium quarters; a few of them have what looks like cameo finish on them.  Is this normal for this issue?

The nickel rolls contained:

8 nickel bullion nickels
5 US nickels
And, a 2000P nickel.

The dime rolls yielded:
Two Jamaican dollars 🙁
One 5 pence coin from the UK
10 cents from the East Caribbean States
A 2 Grosze coin from Poland
$2.50 in US coins
8 1968 nickel alloy dimes
One 1969 dime
A 1974 dime struck slightly off centre (is it a keeper?)
And best of all, a 1968 silver dime!
