May 14th:
Summary

This week, I have been going to my local banks.  I’ve had no luck finding paper money…until today.  A teller called me and said that she had some $2 notes for me. 

Throughout the week, I have hunted a fair share of coins and I was starting to get discouraged until today, I finally found a silver dime from 1959.  Along with a few bucks in US coins, I’m pretty happy that I can still find silver in coin rolls.

May 16th finds:
Today, I went to one of my banks.  They had no paper money, but the teller gave me ten loose pennies and a black toonie.  I bought some rolled coins and I was rewarded with not one, but two silver dimes, both from 1965 and a nickel from 1931!

The silver dimes look like they were broken out of sets.

June 11th update:
Over the last couple of weeks, I have had zero luck finding bills so I resorted to hunting coin rolls.

There wasn’t much to talk about until one pickup of dime rolls contained four silvers!

I had to search through hundreds of dollars worth of coins just to find those.

June 23rd update:  banknotes..and silver!

I have been searching coin rolls over the past week or so.  The effort was worthwile because I was able to find ten silver dimes and a sizeable quantity of US coins.

Other highlights include a nice 1971 quarter, a few coloured 2021 dimes and some 1968 nickel alloy dimes.

In terms of banknotes, I was able to rescue $9 in ones and twos from my local bank.

All in all, I am happy to continue finding stuff for face value.

July 7th update:
A busy week!

I’ve been to many bank branches, including the Main Branch this week.  I was able to score a few banknotes, including a birds $100 replacement note which is sadly torn, and 2 boxes of pennies.

From coin rolls, I got a lot of US coins, a nice 1952 dated nickel, a 2000P nickel and a silver dime from 1966 in the mix.  I got a load of dimes in vintage green wrappers, and I was hoping for a windfall of silver, but there was none.  I think someone bought a bulk lot of these wrappers and just used them to deposit coins.

July 7th…continued…

July 7th…last photos.

July 16th finds:

  I have searched a lot of coin rolls, some of which came from a small town east of Toronto.  This small town bank gave me a few paper notes plus a polymer $5 stamped with a request to track it using cdn-money.ca.

Unfortunately, the rolls from this small town had nothing in them so I went back to my local bank and they did not disappoint!

I got a lot of US coinage plus a nickel from 1937, a 5 pence coin from the UK and a centennial rabbit nickel.

But best of all, there was one silver dime from 1965 in a roll from my local bank.

I have had to search hundreds of dollars worth of coins just to find these small treasures and a silver dime occurs maybe once in every 2 to 3 boxes.

Silver quarters are virtually extinct in the wild; the best bang for your buck are nickels since they still have a decent number of older coins in the rolls.

Of course, some of the rolls were short; Someone inserted a penny into a nickel roll and a nickel into a quarter roll.  Are people so desperate these days that they have to steal a few cents here and there?

More silver!

Yesterday, I went to one of my banks.  While they had no paper notes, the teller offered me some pennies.  Across the street was another one of my banks.  I decided to try my luck there, but the teller had no paper money either.  I asked for some rolled coins and I managed to get some dimes.

I got a few US coins and a couple of 5 pence coins from the UK.  But best of all, there was one 1967 dime in the rolls.

Silver is still out there if you’re willing to search for it!

July 24th:

Over the past week, I’ve hunted through a fair number of coin rolls.

It’s nice to see that you can still find so many old coins, especially in nickel rolls.  I was able to snag another centennial rabbit, a King George V nickel from 1930, a 1962 and a 2000p and a few nickels from the 60s.  Another standout was a really nice 1969 nickel and a 5 pence coin from the UK.


The dime rolls from my local bank never disappoint; I found a really nice 1971 dime, a proof-like dime from 1980 with a mirror finish, and a fair number of US dimes.

The highlights from the dime rolls are a silver from 1964 and a US Mercury dime from 1942!

July 26th finds:
A collection dump…and some more silver!

Yesterday, I bought some rolls of dimes from my local bank.  The Head Teller said that he had something for me and he brought out a bag of old coins that someone had deposited earlier that day.

It must have been a collection dump because there were six original vintage Brinks rolls of pennies from 1966 and 1967 plus two strips of five uncirculated dollar coins from 1968, a coin tube with some really nice 1967 and 68 dimes and nickels, some loose 50c and dollar coins, a bunch of loose pennies, probably from broken vintage rolls plus a 1951 nickel in an old 2x2 flip stamped with the name H.F Bardwell from Sarnia Ontario and a date that was scratched out: March 15 1988?  There was also a Yugoslavian coin that was cut out of a set, still in its cellophane pocket.  To top it off, there was an Indonesian 100 Rupiah coin from 1978 as well.

The dime rolls yielded a fair number of US dimes, a 5 pence coin from the UK, a coin from the Cayman Islands and a coin from Barbados.  But best of all, there was a silver dime from 1963 hiding in there!

I’ve never seen nickel dollars in strips like that before.  The plastic pouches are embossed with “Royal Canadian Mint” so they are legitimate.

July 28th finds:

Today, my neighbourhood bank had some circulated nickel, dime and quarter rolls so I bought them all.

The nickel rolls provided much of the excitement today, yielding a 1954 nickel and a 1944 war nickel!

There were also 1961 and 1964 nickels to round out the vintage finds.

A fair number of US coins were found, given this small sample size of $190 and a coin from Bermuda made this hunt interesting.

These coins might have been part of the collection dump I got in my previous post.

July 29th finds:

Today, I visited a bank that I haven’t been to in awhile.  The teller surprised me by letting me look through some mutilated notes.  The journey $50s are brand new and the birds $2 is oh so close to being a rotator note.
