Hi All,

I am very new in collecting banknotes and this is my first post.. :)

I am looking for some software(app) for managing banknotes collections that can work on PC/MAC/iPad/iPhone, but not a big progress

So far, I am stuck with Excel :)

Anyone using software catalog?
Could you please recommend what software you are using to store banknotes collections?

Thanks in advance
Regards

Not sure if there are any apps specifically designed for banknote collecting.

I use Adobe InDesign to make a document for each series (Birds, Journey, Frontiers, etc.), and have one page for each note in my collection, and for each note I want to eventually have. Originally I started with one $2, one $5, one $10, and so on. Later I added one page for every possible signature combination. Later I added more pages for replacement notes, special serial numbers, etc.

I scan each banknote, front and back. As I obtain new banknotes, I add the scans to the appropriate page. Under each note, I list details such as catalogue numbers, where it was printed, the price I paid, and which prefixes/variants are the most valuable. The Charlton guide and our very own Serial Number Database have been the two most helpful resources.

Then the files are exported to .pdf for easy printing and portability. For those not familiar with InDesign, I'm sure Word or Pages would work just as well. I send the files to my phone and can easily scroll through the documents when at a coin store or a show, to quickly see which notes I have, which I'm missing, which ones aren't in good condition, and so on.

This is so much more helpful than a spreadsheet. For example, I had an otherwise Unc $2 with what looked like a tiny crease that I wanted to replace. A dealer saw my scan and told me that was likely just a counting fold, completely normal at the time, and not a deal-breaker.

While it took some time to create the first document (I started with Birds), after that it was easy to copy the template to other series. Plus, it's downright fun to research the details and work to improve the documents. Car enthusiasts can work on their cars and drive them, record collectors can listen to their records. For me, researching, scanning, cataloguing and searching for new notes is the equivalent of "playing" with my collection, but with almost no handling of the actual banknotes, and has provided countless hours of enjoyment. I'll upload a sample when I have a free minute.

As far as I know, there are no comprehensive "out of the box" solutions available.  But I may be wrong.

Years ago, I created my own website to manage my collection.  It has expanded over time to include world notes, US notes and Canadian Tire Money.  You can check it out at https://currency.bwjm.ca/.  No, it's not available for use by others - sorry.

I know of at least one other person who has designed their own proprietary website that is more than just a simple spreadsheet or basic database.

Great site BWJM! Wow, what an extensive collection of world notes! I know I will be exploring it for a while!  :)

I had the same intent, using Google docs but I let the inventory part of the project slide as I got sidetracked.

One of the more important features on my site is my "Sites & Forums" page I use to list online resources here:

I have most of my collection documented on a spreadsheet & a few years ago, I joined Numista. Their catalogues function like an app in that you can enter your collection (+ add photos, etc) plus there's a forum too.

The banknote catalogue:

(They have a coin catalogue too).

How to registere & add your collection:

WOW BWJM... great collection ..and great site...
I am thinking for something similar on WordPress using https://elementor.com/welcome-cloud/choose-design/
but will see if I will find some time :(

Thank walktothewater
Great collection!

Yes, I started with Numista and looks very promising.
But I don't see mobile app on their site at this moment.

Thanks

Maybe a bit late to the party, but I don't see a mention of www.catamates.com 's BanknoteMate yet. Works a charm on PC, entries are downloaded from Colnect database but you're of course free to modify the data and images to your own taste. And it syncs to your phone / iPad (both Android and iOS) via Dropbox. Worth a try perhaps?

That BanknoteMate app looks very promising! Now I've got to investigate further. If anyone uses it- pls PM me so I can get a better grasp of what it does (how effective it is). Thanks  8)

Thanks for sharing @Lighthouse250 & welcome to the CPMF!  ;)

I guess I am interested in how it performs compared to other online catalogue instruments. I wrote (above) that I have been using Numista (which is free) & my own spreadsheet (plus my site) to track my collection.

With Numista I can get a (LOW) ballpark figure* from their pricing tables on some of the Nation's series. It's pretty much a hit or miss but at least it allows me to enter what I paid for the note.

I guess I am interested in how it compares or what functions it provides that are beyond a simple spreadsheet. For example, does it give an approximate Book Value (BV)? I don't see that in the few sheets that are shown on their site (only a value the collector puts in?) At least that appears the way it is set up.

So yes, if you can provide more clarity (& with some screenshots) that may help.

How would it compare to Track & Price?
http://trackandprice.com/category/world-paper-money/

*Numista's ballpark BV (tables) depend on user input (& correct data) & we know that members who get notes at FV (swapping or from circ) can alter the tables BV to be unrealistically LOW.

No it does not give you book values. It imports data from Colnect, like years, signatures, mintage and so on, and indeed it allows you to enter prices. I don't use that functionality though, as I keep track of that in a spreadsheet. You can actually tag a note as "Have" "Wish" "Sell" or "Trade" if you like. For book values I use The Banknote Book.

I just found this Maktun coin & banknote recognition app from C&C.  Not sure how helpful it is (as I don't think I will be using it) but you may wish to try it out:

https://maktun.com/

It is suppose to be free. Good luck!
