Today, I tried to return a bunch of rolled dimes to a Scotiabank branch that never gives out old coins or paper notes.

When I placed the rolls in the desk, the teller said that she would have to open every single one of the rolls and count the coins.

This would have taken quite some time since I brought in $100 worth of dime rolls.

I declined and walked out of the branch and easily deposited the rolls with no questions asked across the street at BMO.

Is this Scotiabank’s way of discouraging collectors?  I find that they are generally unsympathetic to us and I also believe that this teller simply didn’t want to do the paperwork to deposit the coins because there was less than 1 hour before closing time.

Has anybody else had a similar experience at Scotiabank?  None of the other banks cause this much inconvenience to collectors.

I bank with Scotiabank and it happened to me a few months ago when I was trying to deposit $150 in toonies & loonies and they wanted to count it which I understood because they were wrapped in paper instead of plastic. My guess is they want to make sure it is the correct amount that was put in the rolls. I feel like it is a waste of my time having to wait some time and missed my bus given how I have to wait 5-20 minutes for a TTC bus.

Interesting observation.

Personally, I would not have the patience to have the teller check every single coin.
That’s why I have accounts with every chartered bank; it gives me options.

Another thing to point out is they do it because of people putting foreign coins into the roll, people not putting the exact amount and trying to scam by adding nickels into quarter rolls (Had happened to me before and lost $1.25).

I remember, on one visit to Dollarama, the cashier gave me a rarely-seen 50¢ coin that was supposed to be a loonie. Although I was short of 50¢ that time, she probably must have assumed it was a loonie due to being about the same size.  I didn't complain since I have a high-paying job and 50¢ is just chump change compared to the healthy salary I make.
