Whenever you go to a foreign country, take some time to visit some of the local coin shops. You never know what you can find.

I found a shop here in Hong Kong that has a massive collection of Canadian banknotes, and there was a lot of treasures in there. I found 5 consecutive 2003 BEK inserts for HK$200 each ($31). Naturally I bought the whole set. They also had a FMF $50, but it was too expensive (HK$780).

I'm going to be in New York City & Buffalo soon.  Any recommended shops strong in banknotes in these cities?

I was in Victoria earlier this week and went to AAA Coins on Fort Street.  They had a very reasonable selection of notes including Beattie Coyne modifed $20 changeovers E/E and M/E in F - VF

Sure was a good deal for those BEK inserts. Well for now the new book list those BEK inserts at $40ea but again like most feel, should be worth a lot more. The FMF is listed at $90 in UNC.

Eyevet,

Try this:

For Buffalo:

(the above link, you have to cut and paste the link into the web address)

For New York, NY:

http://www.google.ca/local?hl=en&lr=&q=coin&near=New+York%2C+NY%2C+USA&btnG=Search&sc=1

Google is amazing.  No wonder their stock price is over $300 U.S.!  What will they think of next!  ;D

CA_Banknotes,
We are in fact planning a trip in the near future to China. Shanghai, Beijing and Xian. Do you know of any shops you would recommend stopping in at for banknotes? (cdn of course) Only 2 weeks before we leave.

Sorry, I do not know much about shopping in these places, as I am only in Hong Kong right now. But, such shops are hard to find, they are not often stuck in major shopping centres. I actually had to go to a very small 3-story building in Mongkok, HK which all the shops sell banknotes. And it wasn't in a very nice area to boot.

However, I'll ask some of the locals these next few days, as some have contacts with others in Mainland China.

But please, please, please, please, please be careful when buying notes in foreign countries. Their grading system may differ.

Oh yes, when in Asia, take some time to haggle over the notes. The BEK inserts were HK$250 each originally, but since I bought the whole set, they lowered the price to HK$1,000 after I said I would only offer them HK$750.

I saw a 1937 $1,000 there too, but it was close to HK$30,000 for a VF+ note, a bit out of my range.

This isn't that amazing, have you tried their satellite maps? I found where I am staying right now in Hong Kong and my home, it basically has a satellite image of any devloped city in the world.   ;D
