MILLION DOLLAR AND RELATED NOVELTY NOTES

The June 1991 issue of BANK NOTE REPORTER reported that a BILLION Dollar note may be printed by the same company that printed the well-known intaglio-printed Million Dollar notes with the sailor vignette on the front. I seem to recall reading later that these Billion Dollar notes were printed to order for a specific company but I have never seen one.

The well-known "Sailor Vignette" Million Dollar notes were originally printed for a special promotion being carried out by the JOURNEY'S END MOTEL COMPANY --- these notes carried a JEC Serial Number Prefix (see image of a JEC000000 Specimen note below). These JEC notes are quite rare. When these Million Dollar notes became known to the numismatic fraternity in the early 1990's the company that prepared them (Mega Million Dollar Ideas of Toronto) ordered a much larger second printing which carried the familiar MDI prefix. A third printing was later made with the Canadian coat of arms being replaced by a generic coat of arms (these also had the MDI prefix).
