My prediction is that we'll see the $50 announced by June 1, and released in the summer.  Then, the $20 will be announced by Hallowe'en and released in time for Christmas 2004.  Time will tell though  ;)

As this week draws to a close, many of us are enjoying our first $100-notes from the Journey series.  Times like these are few and far between for people like us.  However, there ARE still two notes to go; both scheduled for release by the end of this calendar year.

So, any speculation as to what we'll see?  Which will come first?  What literature will be quoted on the reverse?  On the $50--how red is RED?  How white (light green) will the Queen's hair be?

I invite you all to comment on these or any other thoughts you may have about the future entries to the Journey series.

Of course, then there's the redesign of the $5 and $10 notes with all the new security features. Given how much counterfeiting there is on these notes, I wonder if the BoC will consider this.

If it was me, I'd do it.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing the woven thread in the $10.  This is why I think we haven't seen any new $10's since September.

...and the redesign of the $5s.  I hope that they'll bring all the fancy security features from the $100 all the way down to the $5s as well.

New $100 bill in circulation

Last Updated Wed, 17 Mar 2004 12:44:33

OTTAWA - Canada's new $100 bills were put into public circulation Wednesday – the latest of the country's currency notes to face a redesign to make them more difficult to counterfeit.

The back of the $100 note will no longer feature a Canada goose. It has been replaced with a new theme – "innovation and exploration" through mapping. Former prime minister Sir Robert Borden is still featured on the note, although with a different portrait.

The brown note gets several new anti-counterfeiting features, including a metallic holographic stripe, a watermarked portrait and a see-through number.

"These security features are reliable, quick, and easy for everybody to use and difficult for counterfeiters to reproduce. Canadians can have confidence that their high-denomination bank notes will be readily accepted," said Bank of Canada governor David Dodge.

"We are delighted the new $100 bill is harder to counterfeit and contains easy ways of verifying its validity," said Diane Brisebois, president of the Retail Council of Canada, in a statement.

"We will continue to work closely with the Bank of Canada to help retailers train their staff on how to quickly check a bank note," she said.

Many retailers now routinely refuse to accept $100 bank notes because of worries they might be counterfeit.

The Bank of Canada plans to introduce new $20 and $50 notes later this year. The $5 and $10 notes have already been revamped with new security features.

The journey $5 and $10 did have more security features than the Birds of Canada notes they replaced, but they do not compare to the newer security features found on the Journey $100 notes.  That being said, I think BofC will proceed with the new Journey $20 and $50 notes first.  Whether they add more security features to the Journey $5 and $10's will likely depend upon the amount of forgeries discovered.

From the media press kits, they have the following information about counterfeits notes in Canada (according to the RCMP).

[spreadsheet]Counterfeits°   2000°    2001°    2002
$5 °4,673°5,306°14,783
$10 °28,968°40,791°108,969
$20 °23,674°30,893°55,102
$50 °18,274°5,275°7,295
$100 °18,544°46,649°22,308
Total°94,133°128,860°208,457
[/spreadsheet]

coinsplus posted those numbers in the general forum.

Since the introduction of the new $10 (2000), the amount of counterfeit $10 found in circulation triple by 2002. If the new bills ($20, $50 and $100) have more advance security feature that are very hard (impossible) to copy than it's safe to assume that the number of fake $10 will continue to increase. I think that the BoC needs to add those new feature to the $5 and $10 from the journey serie.

Its time to start waiting for new $20s and $50s. Most likely the $50 will be relased in summer, but I won't be in Canada for its release, but if the $20 is put into circulation after October, I can get it. When the new $50 is predictably going to be relased in the summer, could anyone mail a few to me in Hong Kong for a premium? :)

Good day all...

According to BWJM's posting on March 20th, he predicted that the new $50 would be announced by June 1st, which is actually tomorrow.  So far there has been NO ANNOUNCEMENT on the Bank of Canada homepage about the next new Journey note.  However, I heard that in the "meeting with Jenkins" section of the forum, coinsplus stated that one of the two remaining denominations was going to have a "national launch", to be held in Vancouver, B.C.  With that being said, I predict that the new $50 with the theme "Nation Building" will be unveiled on June 30th, the day before Canada Day (July 1st).  I am not saying this for certain, but it seems to be "obvious."

The reason why I brought this up was because I had a dream about the new $50 being unveiled and then having to wait until the release date and then getting my paws on one.  When I got my hands on one, the bill was covered in "orangey-red" and had the number 50 in white where it would be placed on the right side of the front of the bill.  And on the back, there were nothing but Canadian flags scattered throughout the bill.  However, I don't believe I paid any attention to what the serial number was - I don't even know if it existed in my dream.  And, after all that excitement, I woke up in the middle of the night before I even finished my dream.

Well, I sure will be looking forward to the release of the new $50 note, whenever it will be.  In the meantime, I will also keep in touch with the BoC homepage in addition to the forum.

Keep smiling!!!   :)

Jonathan

I wonder if the election will halt the new notes from being unveiled?

I think I disagree, Marc.

According to numerous postings on the forum, they say that the new $20's & $50's WILL be released - one in the summer and one in the fall.

So we have to keep our eyes peeled.
