I recently purchased the following two notes on eBay that were described as Crisp UNC:

1954 $1 Beattie-Rasminsky, D/P8000000
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120151507290

1954 $5 Beattie-Rasminsky, D/X6000000
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120151522830

These notes were returned to the seller for refund as the notes did not grade as described.  These notes have
been relisted on eBay, and as a courtesy to my fellow collectors, I am providing a detailed description based
on my physical examination of the notes:

The $1 D/P8000000 has one vertical fold on the left side of the note, as well as, many corner and edge folds
and other handling marks. This note would grade EF/AU.

The $5 D/X6000000 has two vertical folds on the right side of the note, as well as, many corner and edge folds
and other handling marks. This note would grade EF/AU.

Good on you for sharing intel. 8)  I noticed the scans of the notes are crappy enough to not show any folds/demerits.

I was very tempted to bid on these notes myself but I was held back by my skepticism. I'm glad I didn't given your information.

How did the U/Y error note you won turn out?

The 1954 $1 cut out of register note from the same seller was also misrepresented with respect to grade.
The description read "1954 $1CU off cut out of register note U/Y105499" with CU implying Choice UNC or
Crisp UNC.  The note actually graded as follows:

The $1 U/Y0105499 has one vertical centre fold and two other vertical folds that extend half-way down
the note.  This note would also grade EF/AU.

I decided to keep the note anyways as the U/Y prefix is a short series and the cut out of register error is
quite prominent.

Needless to say, I will never buy from this eBay seller again.

It's ebay, overgrading is very common and interestingly buyers drive it a lot of the times, they don't want to pay the money for an accurately graded note, always wanting the 'steal of a deal' so they end up getting what they pay for. Vicious circle.

Great idea, blaming the victim.

Willing victims aren't victims. More like active participants.
People snivel about grades, they snivel about price, they snivel about 3rd party grading or all of the aforementioned yet 90% of them can't be bothered to learn how to grade & they see what they want to see then are astounded they got screwed.
I'm not defending the weasels who deliberately mislead people, simply stating many people are their own worst enemies.

Some good points and essentially we agree. I have found that many buyers, be it on ebay or live and in colour ask for the impossible. They want  gem notes and when presented with them and the price that accompanies the note, they whine. Then they whip out their 'Gem Unc' 1954 BC 50 Devils Face waving it under your nose as they proudly boast how they picked it up for 70% of cat from <insert dealer here> and when you gently but firmly show them the pressed out center fold done so hard there is a tear coming from the Queen's eye because she was squeezed so hard they start to weep or the more obtuse simply 'can't see it'
This then leads us into the necessity of 3rd party grading and hell, people are lapping up PMG graded notes like a starving cat does milk even though they are of course using US standards which are laxer than World grading Standards, not just Canadian standards. *shrug*

I guess the best we can do is ask for a better scan to be sent, and if it doesn't come, don't bid.  I agree that some people deliberately scan poorly to hide faults, others provide such good scans everything can be seen. They deserve our business!

The notes have just sold once again, and for approximately the same amount.

I contacted the eBay buyer who won these two notes tonight and provided him with the link to these postings
for his reference.

He has already replied and thanked me for the "valuable info".

If I was a gambling man I would hedge a bet that these notes will reappear on eBay in less than a month as
EF or better.  :o

I was aware of where the notes in discussion originally came from, the 'winner' of these auctions has bought a fair amount of notes from me and was forewarned by me after I read this thread originated by you and he bought them anyhow so don't wager too much.
