The mystery of the occurrence of "mini ream" notes is no longer a mystery.  Read about it here:

http://www.give-a-buck.com/closet/essay/editorial21.html

This is a first draft report of research that follows up on hudsonab's own work in discovering the Standard Matrix.  Kudos to you, Hudson!  This work would not have been possible without you!

Try reading the essay first.

I did before I asked.  Again I ask the same question. It's not an essay, it's a diatribe but a well written one.

Hell, the world it seems

"My own personal opinion of the Bank of Canada is that they regard us collectors somewhat more favourably than counterfeiters, but not much so. Collectors are honest people who want to know information about note production for purely academic reasons. It's not our fault if pranksters and shysters take the information we have and use it for criminal purposes."

"The cynical collector would surmise that the Bank of Canada is ordering all of these changes just to confuse collectors and brick searchers. Though this is highly unlikely to be the case, there is no evidence to prove or disprove any and all theories. As the catch phrase coined in the movie "Field of Dreams" tells us, "If you build it, they will come". Correspondingly, in our dysfunctional Internet-based society, if you build a theory and post it online, someone will find it, read it and believe it. The information age is no longer about conducting research using clearly-defined principles and objectivity before generating unbiased reports like it was performed in the past. Logic and rationalization go out the window when all information now becomes politicized and is spun to fit hidden agendas. We live in an age when scientists are becoming politicians and vice versa (for example, David Suzuki and Al Gore, respectively). "Progress" has never been such a dirty word like it is today."

Relevance? Isn't any hence a diatribe or a person who needs a good editor. I happen to like this person's writing, succinct simply isn't in his/her/its vocabulary. No big.

Quite a generalization I think. Do you really believe all collectors are honest people. It's like saying all people who go to church believe in GOD.

And wanting to know about note production for purely academic reasons.
Come on now. How often have you bought a note you wanted for face value off a collector.
I'm sure it is far and few between.

Information is gathered and used in a lot of cases to determine how scarce and valuable a note is................and then that information is used to promote the note and sell it accordingly.

Very interesting research Mark.

When I read it I kept thinking of the cost of this new security paper.  Now that the paper has a watermark and security strip through it...perhaps there's a fiscal necessity to print mini reams rather than recycle?  You mentioned it was the BABN who's been getting it right..and no wonder they're awarded the printing contract.  Perhaps they also print on demand.

I haven't read this yet Marc, but will shortly. (I sent you an email before I read this thread even).

I am happy that you were able to springboard off my initial research.  With more people working on this sort of thing, the better us collectors will be.

:)

Thank for the citation :)

few more "mini-ream" ranges, from about 1500 notes taken from circulation.
AOF
AOF9400000-9439999
AOF9940000-9999999

AOJ7440000-7559999

AOR9080000-9119999

I can confirm that there is not only one but TWO layouts:  The so-called Hudson's "Standard Matrix" and another layout in which the rows A, B, C and D are switched with the rows E, F G and H (I called it "Matrix #2").  I found evidence of this second "standard matrix" in the prefixes AOF, AOG, AOJ, AOJ, AOK, AON, AOR and AOS.

But the strangest is that I found evidence of a switching in the matrices in the middle of some regular reams:  I found a case in which the four first rows belongs to the so-called "mini-reams" whereas the four last rows belongs to the matrix #2.   For example, I found that in the ream AOH2440000-2479000, the row "B" have the "mini-ream" position numbers and the row "E" have the position numbers 55, 58, 88, 66 and 60 (in the matrix #2).  How the current explanation could hold with fact?  And I have some difficulties with the "mini ream" theory:  How can a narrow strip of paper can be handled with the printing equipment set for a 40/on layout?

I confess that I still have problems to imagine a logical sequence of printing numbers to fit the pattern found... ??? ??? ???

According to the data I have, the range of "mini-reams" begins at AOH2340000 and ends at AOH2459999.  All the notes I found (15 notes) in this range have the  "mini-ream" position numbers (as those confirmed in the AOH table).  Again, the begining of this mini-ream range is in a middle of a printing block (ther are in the rows E, F, G and H).  The rows A,  B, C and D of this block belongs to the rows  E, F, G and H of the Standard matrix.  I found the note AOH2333900 (91/82), which belongs to the row "G" of the standard matrix, and  AOH2344000 (74/56).  I find that it's a quite complicated method to print notes with the "mini-reams" between the regular reams, with an apparent offset appearing in some place... ???

And I checked carefully my data but I found only AOK2582127 (85/90) who belongs to the "mini-ream". Unfortunately, it's the only note I found in this range, so I cannot confirm that this range is in a "mini-ream".

I really should keep a better record of PN's but here are a few of mine,

AOH 5630888     70/70
AOH 5630676     70/70
AOH 5965441     70/70      Insert
AOH 5630563     70/70
AOH 5630365     70/70
AOH 5630000     70/70

You already have these I think.

AOP 6058184     68/63
AOP 6058183     68/63

I know I got more somewhere, my eyes are going buggy.
