What kind of scanner are you using for scanning your bank notes?

I am using an ancient Epson Stylus CX3200. Never had problems...I lost the original software that came with it so I can no longer do high res. scans.  Does anyone have any software for TWAIN scanners?

The disadavantage of scanning is that the notes appear flat. Various creases and wavy texture are left out.

I am trying to photograph paper money with a good SLR camera. Is it a good idea to use flash?

I have a software called "VueScan 8" It work's great and have many features BUT you'r still gonna need the drivers to make the scanner reconized by windows.

I agree totally. Scanners are useless for properly showing notes that are EF or better. I use a an old 5MP Sony digital camera that has a good manual macro mode. I would recommend NOT using a flash though. What you want to do is get the light source as  low as possible so that it is illuminating the note from the side, thus emphasizing the texture. I bought a small halogen spotlight bulb the other day to get a whiter light as some other bulbs [incandescent & compact fluorescent]  make the notes look artificially yellow. You also want to make sure the room is dark enough so that you don't have any other light sources interfering. A little bit of post processing in photoshop [level adjustment] can help get the colors looking more realistic provided the lighting was good to start with:

Okay. Thanks for the advice. So is it a good idea to provide more light and a faster shutter speed or lesser light and a slower shutter speed?

I'm using a Brother DCP 7030 and when I first got it I had no problem scanning the entire back of the bills.  Now all it will do is scan 1/4 - 1/2 of the bill so I have to turn it upside down on the glass.

Any suggestions to rectify this problem?  Before the New Year I occasionally would manage a full scan and I have tried a number of different options with no avail, so I gave up.

I bought a Dell 946 All-in-One scanner/printer/copier/fax machine for about $70 in 2006 or 2007 and it scans Canadian and U.S. banknotes just fine.  I also have a Canon CanoScan N670U that I bought in 2002 that can scan banknotes without problems.

I wonder if the upcoming Bank of Canada polymer notes will also be "unscannable" on new scanners?

The colour scanner here at work will scan banknotes but prints them covered by 1mm white stripes.

I fully expect that the new notes will be treated the same way.

I have a Canon MP490, about a year old. It will not scan the Journey series, but it will scan the Bird series. These happens will the original bill and the pages in the Charlton Catalogue.

I also need help. I am now running Win7 machines, and my old scanner is no longer supported with drivers.
I have bought two new scanners, and they went back to the store due to them not scanning my modern notes.

Any help or advise would be great on what scanners can be used with Win7 and can also scan banknotes.

I use brother 6490 ... no problems.
It may depend on the software being used. I use photoshop elements 9.

Thanks for the info, but I would very much like to avoid a multi-function machine if at all possible, and just get a scanner that would be compatible and has a functioning driver for Win7.

I would try a small independent computer store that sells new used/reconditioned equipment (such as Wintronics).  Usually the staff at these stores are very helpful.  All the old scanners I used never gave me a problem with scanning notes (HP and Lexmark).

I believe all the new scanners will not scan any modern world currency notes. I have a bunch of new bank of Indonesia notes that my new scanner will scan (Canon MP490). My old HP scanner would. Therefore I would try to find an old scanner at a independent store or a second store. I took my old HP to a second hand store because the ink cost more than the printer/scanner/copier. I should have kept it for just scanning.

I had just gotten a newer Lexmark 3-in-1 fax/copy/scan machine. I soon discovered that it would not scan banknotes. Fortunately, I had not disposed of my trusty old Canon LIDE scanner yet. I guess I now have to keep an otherwise useless single-purpose machine, that I had hoped to get rid of.

Does this problem exist with ALL new scanners? Does anyone know of any new machines presently on the market that will scan banknotes? How will we be able to scan our banknotes when these older machines inevitably die?

On a related note, Photoshop CS3 allowed me to open banknote images (just not print them), but after upgrading to CS5, I can't even open images that Photoshop deems to be banknotes.

All new scanners have built in software to stop scanning of most world banknotes.  Also as JBWM said Photoshop CS5 and CS4 will not open a banknote (older ones yes). Photoshop CS2 apparently will. A friend of mine has it and will give me a copy. THEY are making it hard for us.

My HP PSC1610 has always worked fine (once I took some time out to actually get drivers updated and compatible with my Imac).  The older equipment is the go-to equipment for scanning notes (if you can't photograph them).   I agree with some of the earlier posts that photographs are superior if you can afford the time (and then use an older version of Adobe Photoshop).

Sad but true- plus the new stuff - it's like you need a PhD to use it - its getting so complicated...

Stick to the older equipment and software as it will not impede your progress in getting decent scans (or photos) of your notes.

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but it's an ever-more relevant issue.

My Lexmark X1110 printer/scanner died recently (the scanner is no longer working), so I am trying to find something that will work again for me.

I bought a Canon LIDE 110 scanner but it's failing to scan Journey notes.  It's a real pity because the scanner itself is nice and compact.

I use a HP3050 all in one wireless bought at Costco for under $50 works great.....they have a bigger/better one on sale now for around $70. 

Yeah, most HP printers work well for that.... possibly because they make one machine worldwide per model rather than ones for different countries.

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium that works great....

You could try the Hp 6700 on at Staples for $80, or the HP 5514 on at Best Buy for $40 , both should work well for you.
