$5 serial number on front

Picked up this $5 at work.  The serial number is mirror reverse of normal number on back. It's too strong to be a "bleed through." Maybe during serial number overprinting there was no sheet present, resulting in a "die clash?"

The bill has been heavily circulated - many folds and a tear at top middle. Why it wasn't pulled by now is rather amazing, but I'm glad it wasn't.

Is it possible for you to post a scan of both sides (front and back) of the serial number area?

I think it's not working because there is a $ symbol in your title.

I'm going to play the role of the skeptic for a moment...

The numbers on the front don't appear crisp enough to be legit... I'm wondering if it's possible that someone with a patient hand and a fine-tip marker was hard at work.

If it were an offset error, wouldn't the serial number be different as it would come from the sheet in front???

Not necessarily.  If there was enough ink on the mat, it would be picked up by what ever the number is being printed.  I do agree however that the letters and numbers are a little crude.

That is certainly a possibility, and one which I have considered. The numbers line up perfectly, and on the scan you can see differences between front and back in thickness in various areas.

If so, it was someone with a steadier hand than I've got. And it is still an interesting conversation piece for $5.00.

Are the barcodes added at the same time as the serial numbers?  If so, that would mean this is definitely a homemade job.

I have not had a chance to see many Journey error notes, but the bird series bar codes are added separatly, and first before anything else.  Most likely the same with the Journey notes though.

No, barcodes are added separately, since on the news, when I see video of notes being printed and fed into machines, the barcodes are already there.
