The Most Expensive Canadian Note --- $388,888.00 ?

We've all seen some very high (even ridiculously high) prices being asked for rare Canadian notes in the past but a recent eBay offering takes the cake, and all on the strength of a mere signature variety. Take a look at eBay Item # 110234978785, a Bank of Nova Scotia $5 1898 note that is being offered at a starting price of $388,888.00. No further comment is necessary ! Or am I missing something here???

The note surface on eBay about a year or so ago and was auctioned starting at $1. The demand for it proved minimal as it only achieved $1900. Yes that is one thousand and nine hundred dollars. It then found itself in a successful store where it took considerable time to sell at a very small percentage of the current listing price.

It would have cost the owner only $4.00 to list on eBay. Even if the starting price was over a million dollars the listing price would still be just $4.00. It's interesting though, and very revealing too, that the owner wasn't willing to spend an additional $24.95 and have his note appear in the "Featured Items" section at the top of the listings which is what sellers of very rare notes usually do.

This is just a sad publicity stunt and it doesn't help the image of our hobby in any way, in fact it can only harm it. We could all do the same sort of insane thing and create chaos on eBay. The note is undeniably rare and desirable but I'd much rather have a couple of 2008 Aston Martins or Ferraris sitting in my driveway than a circulated Bank of Nova Scotia $5 note in my living room, wouldn't you?! Or perhaps a nice new home overlooking the beautiful harbour of Annapolis Royal .... !

It's particularly amusing that this note is now just one of three known, two privately held.  When people can't comprehend the dynamic nature of note register information they can end up looking a bit . . . sad.

I wonder if the seller is a Forum member? Does he realize that three examples are now known?

Something on  E Bay to put on watch. Wonder how many times the price will change or be relisted before the seller realizes it is not worth that price (no note is in my opinion)?
Now relist it for $5 to start and see the fur fly, that would be interesting. As it's been said many times here, then the market would decide.

Looks like now the seller made it $688,000.00 now. Thats way overpriced! With that money you can buy a 1911 $1 Silver in where that is 2 known!

I think I know who this seller is.

.... a company that moved from trading currency to more of being a cash brokerage house... right in downtown vancouver, 1 or 2 blocks off of hastings, on a road going the same direction.

A few notes odds and ends, and I bought a 4 cycle 1954 $5 from him.  And the price was "Vancouver style" :-)  (HIGH)

The language "reads" as though he was speaking right to me.....

Wow, It's really appreciated to $688,888! That's about a house price in Burnaby nowadays. At this rate it's gonna be over 2 million by years end. Makes the earlier $388,888 looking like a bargain now

I strongly suspect that this item is being offered by a person of Asian heritage since the number 8 is considered to be very very lucky by most Asians. I predict that the price will be increased to $888,888.88 to coincide with the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing on the 8th day of the 8th month (August 8th). The seller (if that's the right word!) is getting tremendous publicity for just a couple of dollars a week and probably feels that his actions will bring him good luck .... and well they might.

Remember, you heard it here first!

It will be a good wake up call when the new 6th edition of the Canadian Bank Note guide comes out and prices the note just over two thousand dollars in the assigned grade. No amount of logic will be able to explain such markups.

The auction has been reactivated. It's now Item # 110241645530 on a Buy-It-Now/Make Offer basis priced at  $688,888.00.

It looks like CBC Radio in Halifax wants to interview the seller regarding who John Doull was and if there is any connection with the John W Doull bookstore in Halifax.  Given that John Doull was a dry goods wholesale businessman, it could well be a business of his descendants.  Maybe with a little publicity, this note will approach the listed amount

The "unique" Doull note is now priced at $5,500 in Fine and at $7,000 in VF in the new 6th Edition Charlton catalogue. Moreover, the catalogue reveals that 3 (three) of these Doull notes are now known to exist so the one on eBay is not as unique as it used to be!
