Dominion of Canada 1911, $500 note

Sorry, don't have a scanner, but, page 170 of the 20th edition2008, Charlton Standard Catalogue has the exact same picture...

The book gives a price but since so few are sold its hard to say what the note is actually worth

I think you will find plenty of interest but few capable of making this purchase. Without pictures, grades, serial numbers or a detailed description it is very hard to evaluate a note.

One of these came to auction 3 years ago in VG-Fine grade and was estimated at $150,000. It was bought for around $125,000 if I recall. At that time, it was said there were two of these surviving so if this is a third, the prices may come down a bit if the prices were that high assuming only 2 surviving. Nevertheless a very rare note.

If you now have this note, please tell the story as to how you got it.  It sounds like it was a find and that you didn't expect it to be worth this much.  I don't have the means to buy the note, but I like a good story.

An example of the same note (with Serial No. 010303) was offered in the Feb. 24-26, 2005, TOREX Auction. It was illustrated in the catalogue where it was graded as VG/Fine and estimated at $150,000. I don't believe that it found a buyer but I could be wrong. The TOREX catalogue described this note as "The Empress of Canadian Banknotes".

Whatever you do, don't wash it, press it, or trim it!

Put it in a safety deposit box ASAP. No insurance coverage if lost or stolen.

I don't believe that it found a buyer but I could be wrong.

Perhaps it sold privately after the auction. I recall a buzz around this and seem to recall a dealer buying it.

The note in question is not the same as the one portraid on the torex page. His is clearly serial number 012735.

A dealer friend of mine from the Toronto area told me last year that "several" $500 & $1000 Dominion of Canada issued notes are in the hands of an old-time aristocratic family in Toronto but he cautioned that these notes will probably never ever enter the collector's marketplace. This gentleman (who I've known for 30 years) has always proved to be 100% reliable with his information in the past and I have no reason not to believe him in this instance.

In regards to the color on the back, I do not hve the bill with me at this moment, I took  hanmers suggestion and put it in mu safety deposit box in the bank.

Kid's comment in regards to the color on the back is correct, brownish tint..

This newly discovered note is now for sale by heritage auctions with an opening bid of $100,000.

  This note is one of the best notes to show up first here on the forums.

 Ebay Item # 170258140550

THe note on Heritage Long Beach Sale (Septmeber 2008) sold for $322,000. It was graded VF20.
