It there any particular reason that the forum is open to guests (not registered users).

Why not? What have we got to hide?

One of the main reasons for having this forum in the first place is to share information. There are TONS of people who read this forum but do not sign up for an account simply because they want to read what is posted. Having the forums open also means that Google can index the site which improves visibility in terms of better search results. This drives more visitors here.

Closing the forums would result in less visitors, would suggest that we have something to hide or that we are being secretive about something, and would kill our goals of sharing information as widely as possible. With less visitors, we get less new members, and as people leave the site, this means that ultimately the number of active users will decrease and eventually, it'll just be a couple of people here and that's it.

There would have to be a VERY compelling reason before I consider closing the forums.
