Wednesday the 25th, during a morning radio show on CBC -Quebec city, interviewer Claude Bernatchez discussed with Michel Lebeau, senior analyst at the Bank of Canada, province of Quebec.

Most of the discussion was about counterfeit bills, how to recognize one and what to do with it, which security features you should look to, etc.

At the end of the discussion, Mr. Lebeau mentioned that there will be new security elements on the next serie of canadian banknotes, which should be released during the year 2011;D

Funny suggestion, friedsquid!  ;D
But the government normally tries to hide poverty, so I seriously doubt they're gonna show it on banknotes.  ::)
I guess they will play it safe and go back to some sceneries & animal stuff, or natural resources as Mortgage Guy wrote.

In fact, I've no idea so far what the theme will be, nor if we will switch to polymer notes, though I have the feeling we will.

The Canadian Bank Note Company already produces polymer notes: http://www.ic.gc.ca/app/ccc/srch/nvgt.do?sbPrtl=&prtl=1&estblmntNo=101115400000&profile=cmpltPrfl&profileId=1401&app=sold&lang=eng

And yes, 2011 will arrive quicker than we think!  :D

Lmao... squid.

Perhaps the next series could feature global warming.

$5 Melting of our glaciers/Death of the Polar Bear
$10 Tornadoes
$20 Palm trees in Toronto
$50 Forest fires
$100 Flooding/Soil erosion

Just a precision, based on what I heard, I assumed there will be a totally new serie, and that they won't just upgrade the actual banknotes. I'm translating you a part of the interview so you can judge for yourself.  ;)

Starting at 6:22 in the interview, here's what Mr. Lebeau says :
"[...] en 2011, on va émettre une nouvelle série qui sera plus sécuritaire. C'est la condition ultime pour la Banque du Canada, d'émettre une nouvelle série. C'est pas une coquetterie qu'on a de changer le design des billets [...] donc en 2011, vous devriez voir apparaître une nouvelle série de billets de banque qui vont être, on l'espère, encore plus sécuritaires."

translation...

"[...] in 2011, we will issue a new serie that will be safer. It is the ultimate condition for the Bank of Canada, to issue a new serie. We're not being fancy by changing the design of the banknotes [...] so in 2011, you should start seeing a new serie of banknotes that will be, we hope, even more secure."

"New serie", "change of design"... I assumed this ain't just an upgrade of security elements.
I wonder if they would dare making different sizes for every denomination?
Or go ahead an create the 200$ banknote...

oh great... more sleeves..instead of making polymer notes...why not just put the notes in PMG type sleeves and have them pre graded so its easier...
Any one else go for that ???

"We're not being fancy by changing the design of the banknotes..."

Could this mean they are thinking of issuing the exact same Journey series designs, but on polymer instead?  Increased security without being "fancy" and changing the design.....  you gotta love pure speculation!

I think that 7 years since the release of the previous series is too short of time to warrant complete redesign of the banknotes.

As to the security features, the entire series may be released in polymer. More likely though is that it will be a mix, lower denominations (such as 5 and 10) in polymer, and the rest on paper, with a security feature such as motion thread added. Canada may follow countries like Mexico and Chile, where low-denomination notes are in polymer and high-denomination in paper. The high-denomination notes in Mexico are protected by motion security threads, and Chile will likely have them on their new high-denomination notes too.

What is a "motion security thread"?

"Motion Security Thread" is an embedded thread that contains thousands of microscopic lenses which create a moving image effect when the banknote is tilted.

The information about the technology is here:
http://www.crane.se/site.aspx?id=572

The first banknote with the motion thread was 1000 kroner from Sweden. Since then, the following banknotes were also released:

Mexico 200 and 1000 pesos (100 and 500 not yet released)
Paraguay 100,000 guaranies
Korea 50,000 won
Denmark 50 kroner (100, 200, 500, 1000 not yet released)

For the images of the notes, check out this site: http://www.banknotenews.com

In 2010, the new US$100 will also feature the motion thread.

That is actually really neat....Now brick searchers will have to deal with motion sickness as well, when going through bricks :)

Could very well be.  Romania did the exact same thing - switched from paper to polymer but kept the designs largely intact.

It'll probably be a whole generation before we see a bill larger than $100.  Plans for a $200 note were scrapped only three years ago.  http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2006/08/19/banknote-canada.html

We definitely will not see $1000 notes ever again. Too much problems with money laundering plus what merchant in their right mind will keep change for $1000 in their tills? Its a huge security issue.

Even tellers are not supposed to keep over $2000 in their tills due to security and insurance issues.

IMO:
We've seen prior new issues printed and released before the formal year of issue (eg 2001 Journey notes printed and released in 2000) so we may see the new series sooner (like end of 2010) than later.  Also, I think the mixture of polymer and paper (maintained on higher denominations) is more likely than just the one (all polymer).  If security is still a big concern than polymer is the only logical way to go.

Are you sure that the 2001 Jouurney notes were released in 2000? If i remember correctly the 2001 Ten issue was indeed printed and ready in 2000 but only hit the streets in mid-January 2001.
I don't think we ever had seen any Bank note get issued and released before its official start year... I could be wrong.

As for the 2011 series, i believe sometime this year they will announce the official design. Hopefully as early as spring next year we could be in for a whole new style of notes.
The only downside is, much like all other series it'll only be a matter of time before someone figures out how to counterfeit them. >:(

JB-2007, you are correct.  According to Charlton, the official first day of issue for the Journey $10 was January 17, 2001.

We definitely will not see $1000 notes ever again.

Is a $100 bill useful today?  Because someday that's what $1000 will be worth in today's dollars due to inflation.  Expect that the BoC will release a new $1000 note by then, and that a $200 and $500 denomination will have been released along the way.  Perhaps not in the remainder of our lifetimes, but it'll happen eventually.
