2011: Next serie of canadian banknotes

Wednesday the 25th, during a morning radio show on CBC -Quebec city, interviewer Claude Bernatchez discussed with Michel Lebeau, senior analyst at the Bank of Canada, province of Quebec.

Most of the discussion was about counterfeit bills, how to recognize one and what to do with it, which security features you should look to, etc.

At the end of the discussion, Mr. Lebeau mentioned that there will be new security elements on the next serie of canadian banknotes, which should be released during the year 2011.

Très intéressant ! 2011 ça s'en vient vite. 

2011 will roll around quickly!!!   Can't wait to see the new designs and may be perhaps, Polymer notes.

But the government normally tries to hide poverty, so I seriously doubt they're gonna show it on banknotes. 
I guess they will play it safe and go back to some sceneries & animal stuff, or natural resources as Mortgage Guy wrote.

In fact, I've no idea so far what the theme will be, nor if we will switch to polymer notes, though I have the feeling we will.

But on a serious note I kind of like Mortgage Guys idea.

Just a precision, based on what I heard, I assumed there will be a totally new serie, and that they won't just upgrade the actual banknotes. I'm translating you a part of the interview so you can judge for yourself. 

Starting at 6:22 in the interview, here's what Mr. Lebeau says :
"[...] en 2011, on va émettre une nouvelle série qui sera plus sécuritaire. C'est la condition ultime pour la Banque du Canada, d'émettre une nouvelle série. C'est pas une coquetterie qu'on a de changer le design des billets [...] donc en 2011, vous devriez voir apparaître une nouvelle série de billets de banque qui vont être, on l'espère, encore plus sécuritaires."

translation...

"[...] in 2011, we will issue a new serie that will be safer. It is the ultimate condition for the Bank of Canada, to issue a new serie. We're not being fancy by changing the design of the banknotes [...] so in 2011, you should start seeing a new serie of banknotes that will be, we hope, even more secure."

"New serie", "change of design"... I assumed this ain't just an upgrade of security elements.
I wonder if they would dare making different sizes for every denomination?
Or go ahead an create the 200$ banknote...

oh great... more sleeves..instead of making polymer notes...why not just put the notes in PMG type sleeves and have them pre graded so its easier...

Could this mean they are thinking of issuing the exact same Journey series designs, but on polymer instead?  Increased security without being "fancy" and changing the design.....  you gotta love pure speculation!

That's how I read  that snippet, Kelly.
Looking forward to v3.0 for the 5s and 10s.

I think that 7 years since the release of the previous series is too short of time to warrant complete redesign of the banknotes.

As to the security features, the entire series may be released in polymer. More likely though is that it will be a mix, lower denominations (such as 5 and 10) in polymer, and the rest on paper, with a security feature such as motion thread added. Canada may follow countries like Mexico and Chile, where low-denomination notes are in polymer and high-denomination in paper. The high-denomination notes in Mexico are protected by motion security threads, and Chile will likely have them on their new high-denomination notes too.
